Yes—Vincent finds his son Edgar, who is alive and returns home in the finale. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Vincent Anderson, and the reunion happens after Edgar sees his father’s televised plea and recognizes their private signal, “Race you home.” But the ending does not solve every mystery: Detective Michael Ledroit’s search for Marlon Rochelle remains unresolved.
How Vincent and Edgar reunite
At the start of the final episode, Vincent is passed out in subway tunnels after his search for Edgar and is suffering a severe psychological breakdown. He recognizes Edgar’s drawings underground, steals the Eric costume from the studio, and goes to a televised protest.
Vincent first appeals to Edgar while wearing the puppet head. Then he removes it and speaks directly to the cameras. He uses the words “Race you home,” a private code shared by father and son. Showrunner Abi Morgan explains that Vincent has to learn to let Edgar win.
Edgar is at a diner when he sees the broadcast. He understands the signal, runs out, and heads home. Vincent runs there too, and they reunite. The finale confirms that Edgar is alive and makes it home.

What the ending means for Vincent
The reunion is also a turning point in Vincent’s understanding of his own behavior. Before entering rehab, he tells Cassie, “I’m that toxic thing. It’s me.” Morgan says Vincent has to face “who the real monster is.” In that reading, Eric is not a literal creature behind the family’s pain; the more important confrontation is Vincent acknowledging the harm he has caused.
The closing scene shows Vincent sober and working in the Eric costume on Good Day Sunshine, with Cassie, Sebastian, and Edgar in the audience. Afterward, Edgar wears the costume. Benedict Cumberbatch interprets that image as Edgar taking ownership of the creation again—a passing of the baton between father and son, rather than a new plot revelation.

Why the ending is still bittersweet
Edgar’s return does not resolve Marlon Rochelle’s disappearance. Near the end, Detective Michael Ledroit and Marlon’s mother Cecile look over a landfill where they believe Marlon may be buried. Cecile later speaks outside the 27th Precinct, calling for love, hope, and a city that protects its children. Director Lucy Forbes describes the conclusion as bittersweet and says it leaves viewers hoping for change.
The two cases therefore end differently: Vincent and Edgar are reunited, while Marlon’s fate and the demand for justice remain open. That contrast gives the family reunion its emotional force without suggesting that every child in the story has been brought home.
