Joey Chestnut defeated Takeru Kobayashi, 83–66, in Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef, Netflix’s live hot-dog-eating special on September 2, 2024. It was their first head-to-head hot-dog contest since 2009. Netflix said Chestnut’s total set a record for most hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes without dunking.
Who won Chestnut vs. Kobayashi, and what was the score?
Netflix’s recap gives Chestnut the win with 83 hot dogs to Kobayashi’s 66. CBS News reported Kobayashi at 67, a one-hot-dog difference between the two accounts; the 83–66 score here follows Netflix’s final result. CBS also reported that Chestnut’s 83 surpassed his previous 76-hot-dog mark from the 2021 Nathan’s contest.
Netflix described Chestnut’s 83 as a record for the most hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes without dunking. That distinction matters: it is a record claim tied to the specified no-dunking format, not an unqualified claim across every competitive-eating format.
Why was this contest billed as unfinished business?
The 2024 event was the first time Chestnut and Kobayashi had competed against each other in a hot-dog-eating contest since 2009. Netflix says Chestnut won their earlier meeting in a five-hot-dog sudden-death eat-off. The rivalry was also a meeting of two Nathan’s contest champions: Netflix’s Media Center described Chestnut as a 16-time champion and Kobayashi as a six-time champion.

What were the rules for the Netflix hot dog contest?
The main match gave each competitor 10 minutes to eat hot dogs and buns. Netflix’s rules were designed to distinguish this format from contests in which dunking is permitted:
- Contestants could not dunk the hot dogs or pour water on them.
- The frankfurter had to stay attached to its bun; separating them was prohibited.
- Penalties could apply for rule violations or regurgitation.
- After the clock ended, contestants had 30 seconds to finish food still in their mouths.
- Excess crumbs could be weighed and deducted if necessary.
- A tie would trigger three minutes of overtime, followed by sudden death if the tie remained.
The event’s hot dogs were identified by Netflix’s Media Center as all-beef. The available event sources do not identify a specific retail brand supplier.

How does the result compare with Nathan’s and the 2009 matchup?
Comparisons need to account for rules as well as totals. Netflix’s 2024 match prohibited dunking and required the hot dog and bun to remain together. CBS News describes Chestnut’s prior 76-hot-dog mark as a 10-minute Nathan’s result from 2021, while Netflix’s record claim is specifically for the no-dunking format. The figures show the reported totals, but they should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison without confirming the applicable rules for each contest.
The 2009 encounter had a different ending: according to Netflix, the competitors were tied and Chestnut won a five-hot-dog sudden-death eat-off. In 2024, Netflix’s event rules set out three minutes of overtime for a tie, with sudden death if needed; the reported final score meant no tiebreak was necessary.
