The aggregate score establishes that the season received a low Tomatometer rating; it does not establish one official reason for that result. Rotten Tomatoes’ page includes individual reviews with differing responses. Clarisse Loughrey’s excerpt calls the season exploitative, while Alex Maidy’s describes it as visceral and slightly fictionalized. Those are individual critics’ opinions, not an explanation endorsed by Rotten Tomatoes as a whole. The season’s Rotten Tomatoes reviews
Netflix’s own framing offers context for the show’s subject, but not a cause for the rating. Its Media Center says, “Ed Gein didn’t just influence a genre — he became the blueprint for modern horror,” and names Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs in describing the story’s place in horror culture. That is Netflix’s promotional framing, not an independent finding about the series’ historical accuracy. Netflix Media Center’s page for the series
