This was a temporary 2014 U.S. price deal, not a benefit Netflix offers today. BGR reported that new subscribers would pay $8.99 per month while existing subscribers could keep the $7.99 monthly rate for two more years; BGR attributed that duration to CNBC. The reported term would have ended around 2016.
What Netflix announced in 2014
In a May 9, 2014, report, BGR described a price increase for new Netflix subscribers in the United States. It reported a monthly price of $8.99 for new subscribers and said existing subscribers could keep paying $7.99 for two more years. BGR attributed the two-year detail to CNBC. Read BGR’s 2014 report.

The two-year protection was temporary. Its stated duration points to an end around 2016; the report does not establish that subscribers kept the rate beyond that period or specify additional eligibility conditions.
Does the old-price protection still apply?
No. The 2014 report is historical, not evidence of an active grandfathered price. Netflix’s current Help Center says, “Once a price change is announced, the new plan prices apply to everyone.” It also says Netflix emails members details one month before the billing date on which an increase applies. How to check your current Netflix price
Plan prices depend on country and can change over time, so the historical U.S. figures are not useful for checking a current bill. Netflix’s Help Center says members can compare current plans and prices and change plans at any time. Select your country on Netflix’s localized pricing information, then check your account for the amount and billing details that apply to you.
For dated context, CBS reported a separate U.S. price increase on March 27, 2026, saying the new rates were in effect for new members and existing members would be notified in the coming weeks.
