The film is Leave the World Behind, Sam Esmail’s 2023 Netflix apocalypse thriller. Its self-driving Teslas pile into one another during a fictional cyberattack crisis—but the scene is part of the story, not evidence about real Tesla vehicles.
What is Leave the World Behind about?
Amanda and Clay Sandford take their children to a rented home on Long Island. G.H. Scott and his daughter Ruth arrive after dark, seeking shelter and warning of a cyberattack. As communications and other technology fail, both families try to understand what is happening while public order frays.
Netflix describes the premise as a cyberattack that knocks out the family’s devices just as two strangers appear at their door. The film adapts Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel, and Esmail wrote and directed it. Its cast includes Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Myha’la, Kevin Bacon, Farrah Mackenzie, and Charlie Evans. Netflix Tudum’s film overview and the Netflix Media Center release record provide the official synopsis and credits.
What happens with the self-driving Teslas?
In one of the crisis’s most striking scenes, driverless Teslas crash into one another and block a road. Netflix’s ending explainer identifies the vehicles as “self-driving Teslas” and discusses the collision as one of the film’s technology failures.

- Three Play Modes: Use the on/off switch to choose off, lights and movement, or lights, movement, and sound. Spinning gears invite children to observe motion and explore basic mechanics.
- Gift for Ages 3+: A playful light-up car for 3-year-old boys and girls, suitable for birthdays, holidays, game prizes, or gift shops.
- Shared or Solo Play: Children can watch the colorful gears turn and the car move, join parents or siblings on the floor, or enjoy independent play that supports interaction and observation.
That is a fictional event within the movie’s cyberattack scenario. It does not show that Teslas attacked anyone, establish how real-world vehicles behave, or prove a claim about their safety. The film also does not settle exactly what caused the crisis, so the sequence works as part of its imagined breakdown rather than as a technical explanation.
When did the film come out, and where can you watch it?
Leave the World Behind opened in select U.S. theaters on November 22, 2023, and began streaming on Netflix in the U.S. on December 8, 2023, according to the Netflix Media Center. It is a 2023 feature, not a newly released 2026 movie. Netflix’s official title page lists the film; streaming availability and plan details may vary by country.

Why does the ending leave the cause unclear?
Spoilers: The film does not fully explain who or what initiated the crisis. Esmail told Netflix Tudum that he wanted to leave “breadcrumbs” without giving the audience every answer. He has also said he was interested in a disaster movie centered on a cyberattack because many people lack a concrete sense of what such an event might look like or how damaging it could be, in the United States and globally. Those comments describe the film’s creative aim; they are not a prediction that its particular chain of events will happen.
The title comes from the rental listing that led Amanda to the house. In the finale, Rose reaches a neighbor’s doomsday bunker and watches the ending of Friends from a physical-media collection while the wider emergency remains unresolved. Esmail described that ending as “pure escapism.” The Netflix Tudum ending explainer discusses both the unresolved crisis and Rose’s final choice.
