The $8 figure was Netflix’s rounded U.S. launch price for adding someone outside your household in 2023. It is not the current ad-free price: Netflix’s Help Center lists U.S. extra-member pricing at $7.99 a month with ads or $9.99 without ads, subject to plan eligibility and billing arrangements. The account owner chooses and pays for the extra-member slot; Netflix does not automatically add a charge to every account.
What happened when Netflix announced the $8 charge?
On May 23, 2023, Netflix said it was contacting U.S. subscribers who shared their accounts outside their household. Its announcement stated, “A Netflix account is for use by one household.” The rollout introduced a paid extra-member option for eligible accounts. The often-quoted $8 was the rounded version of the announced $7.99 monthly U.S. fee, not a universal or current ad-free price. Netflix’s May 23, 2023 announcement is the historical context for the headline.
How much does it cost to add an extra member now?
As of October 8, 2026, Netflix’s U.S.-dollar Help Center listing shows two extra-member prices. These are monthly prices before any applicable tax; packages or partner billing can affect the price or whether the feature is available. Check the account’s own plan and billing details before relying on the figures.
| Extra-member option | Netflix-listed U.S. price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| With ads | $7.99 per month | Available only when the owner’s plan and billing arrangement support extra members. |
| Without ads | $9.99 per month | Available only when the owner’s plan and billing arrangement support extra members. |
Netflix lists its Standard plan at $19.99 per month and Premium at $26.99 per month; both support extra-member slots. Standard with ads is listed at $8.99 per month, but it does not support an extra member. Netflix’s Plans and Pricing page gives the current amounts. Its retrieved page returned U.S.-dollar prices despite a country query parameter in the URL, so subscribers elsewhere should verify local pricing in their account.

Who can add an extra member?
Netflix lists one extra-member slot on Standard and up to two on Premium. The account owner buys and manages the slot. An extra member is not available on Netflix’s ad-supported plan, and some third-party-billed accounts and provider packages are ineligible. In some package arrangements, adding a member may require a secondary payment method and the charge may be paid directly to Netflix. Eligibility depends on the particular account and package. Netflix’s Extra Members help page describes these restrictions.
What does Netflix mean by a household?
Netflix defines a Netflix Household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the subscriber watches Netflix. It says it establishes the Household using devices signed in on the same internet connection as the TV, along with IP address, device IDs, and account activity. A Household can be updated from a TV.

What does an extra member get—and what are the limits?
An extra member gets a separate account, password, and profile, rather than simply sharing the owner’s login. The owner can invite someone and may transfer an existing profile when setting up the extra-member account. Netflix’s feature has practical limits:

There is no single answer for every viewer. Compare the actual extra-member price and available plan with the separate membership the other person would choose, including whether they want ads, taxes, and any country-specific pricing. Also account for the owner’s eligibility and slot limit, the extra member’s one-profile and one-device-at-a-time restrictions, and any package or billing restrictions. Netflix’s listed U.S. Standard and Premium prices can help with a U.S. comparison, but the right calculation depends on the specific account.
