The Great Flood is a South Korean science-fiction disaster film that began streaming on Netflix on December 19, 2025. It starts as a desperate escape from a global flood, then expands into a stranger story about a mission tied to humanity’s future.
What is The Great Flood about?
Netflix’s September 15, 2025 announcement describes the film as a story set on “the last day on Earth,” as a catastrophic flood submerges the world and traps survivors in a sinking apartment building. The immediate struggle follows An-na and her young son, Ja-in, as they try to get out before the rising water overwhelms them. Netflix’s announcement presents the premise as both a disaster scenario and a science-fiction film.

Kim Da-mi plays An-na, an AI researcher. Park Hae-soo plays Hee-jo, a member of a security team who arrives with a mysterious mission connected to humanity’s future. The film is written and directed by Kim Byung-woo, and produced by Hwansang Studio Seoul.
What is the sci-fi twist?
Spoiler-light answer: the flood is not the whole story. Hee-jo’s mission widens the stakes beyond getting An-na and Ja-in to safety, shifting the film from a contained survival drama toward a larger science-fiction premise. Netflix’s promotional material hints at a rocket bound for space and mysterious golden fragments, but explaining how those elements fit together would give away more of the film.

That change in scale is a matter of taste. Tom’s Guide reviewer Alix Blackburn praised the early flood sequences and the emotional bond between An-na and her son, but found the later sci-fi turn confusing and the third act overambitious. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measure of critical or audience consensus. Read the Tom’s Guide review for that opinion.

Watch it if you want a survival story with a parent-and-child emotional core and are open to a plot that moves into more ambitious sci-fi territory. If you prefer disaster films to stay focused on physical survival and a straightforward explanation, the later shift may be less satisfying. The premise is best approached without expecting a conventional flood thriller from beginning to end.
