Yes—as a loose comparison. The Waterfront has the coastal North Carolina setting and small-community backdrop that may recall Outer Banks, while its family business under pressure and dangerous schemes invite an Ozark comparison. Those are editorial shorthand, not an official Netflix comparison: the series has its own focus on a fictional fishing empire and the Buckley family trying to keep control of it.
What is The Waterfront about?
Netflix describes The Waterfront as a drama series inspired by true events, set in fictional Havenport, North Carolina. The Buckleys have long dominated the town’s fishing industry and restaurant scene. After patriarch Harlan suffers two heart attacks, his wife Belle and son Cane try to keep the family businesses afloat, while daughter Bree faces recovery and custody struggles.
Creator, showrunner and executive producer Kevin Williamson told Netflix Tudum that the family built “this mini fishing empire in their small little town.” The series centers that commercial-fishing business and the relationships tied to it, rather than treating the coast as scenery alone.
Netflix’s US release date was June 19, 2025. The listed season has eight episodes, and the principal cast includes Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Jake Weary and Melissa Benoist. Netflix Media Center and Netflix Tudum provide the series details.

Why the Outer Banks comparison fits—and where it stops
The clearest connection to Outer Banks is regional atmosphere: both evoke coastal North Carolina. Netflix describes Havenport as fictional and highlights coastal scenery, beach houses and a working fishing dock. That supports a coastal-drama comparison, but not a claim that the shows share characters, storylines or a particular plot structure.
The Waterfront’s working waterfront gives its setting a distinct center of gravity. Williamson said, as quoted by Netflix Tudum, “We’ve never really seen a story about the commercial fisherman told before in any sort of dramatic way in a family drama.” The Buckleys’ fishing empire is both a livelihood and a source of power in their town.

Why the Ozark comparison fits—and where it stops
The Ozark analogy comes from the pressure on a family trying to preserve a failing business while becoming entangled in dangerous schemes. Netflix’s premise supports that broad family-under-pressure and crime-drama connection; Netflix does not present the series as an Ozark equivalent.
The distinction matters: the Buckleys’ defining enterprise is a local fishing and restaurant business in a coastal community. The comparison is useful for describing the combination of family conflict, business survival and danger, but it should not be mistaken for a promise of the same tone, plot or narrative approach as Ozark.

Is the story based on a real family?
Netflix calls the series “inspired by true events,” but its official materials do not identify the specific events or establish the Buckleys as a one-to-one portrayal of a documented family. Havenport is fictional. The safest description is that the show takes inspiration from true events while dramatizing a fictional family and town.
