Everest (2015) is a survival drama about two climbing expeditions caught in a deadly storm while trying to reach the summit. The story is rooted in the Mount Everest disaster of May 10, 1996. Tom’s Guide reported that the film ranked No. 6 on Netflix’s U.S. movie list on March 17, 2025—but that dated report does not confirm where, or whether, it is streaming now.
What is Everest about?
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, Everest follows two expeditions attempting to summit the mountain as a severe snowstorm closes in. Universal’s synopsis frames the film as a survival story about climbers confronting extreme conditions far above the safety of base camp. Universal Pictures’ film page provides the official premise.
The story centers on expedition leaders Rob Hall, played by Jason Clarke, and Scott Fischer, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Other figures named in the film’s cast include Doug Hansen (John Hawkes), Beck Weathers (Josh Brolin), Yasuko Namba (Naoko Mori), and Jan Hall (Keira Knightley), who waits for news at home. These roles help orient viewers, but the movie is a dramatic feature, not a documentary record of every conversation or event.
Is the movie based on a true story?
Yes. The film’s real-world subject is the May 10, 1996 disaster on Mount Everest, when a fast-moving storm trapped climbing teams high on the mountain. PBS FRONTLINE’s documentary Storm Over Everest describes the storm and the rescue efforts, including help from climber and filmmaker David Breashears.

Universal’s 2015 announcement connects the film to the true story and to Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction account, Into Thin Air. The book is useful further reading about the disaster; the announcement does not establish that the film is a formal, direct adaptation of the book. Universal’s 2015 announcement explains that connection.
