The lineup ranged from action, horror and westerns to romance, comedy, family films and musicals, with major stars, established directors, first-time filmmakers and adaptations among its draws. It was a planned slate—not a guarantee that every title would arrive on a particular date or be available in every country.
What Netflix announced for 2021
Netflix’s January 12, 2021 announcement, published by About Netflix and marked Global, presented the year’s films as a weekly offering. The company illustrated the range with titles and genres rather than a single theme: zombie action in Army of the Dead, westerns in The Harder They Fall and Concrete Cowboy, teen romance in To All the Boys: Always and Forever and The Kissing Booth 3, and horror in Fear Street and There’s Someone Inside Your House.
Other examples included the book adaptations The Woman in the Window, Munich and The Last Letter from Your Lover; action films Red Notice, Sweet Girl and Kate; and family titles YES DAY, Back to the Outback and Finding ‘Ohana. The selection shows the breadth of the preview, but should not be read as a complete list of all films Netflix planned for the year.
Genres and representative titles
Netflix’s accompanying 2021 slate document grouped planned titles across a range of genres. These examples help orient viewers, but they do not establish current availability in any particular country.

Filmmakers, stars and adaptations
The announcement highlighted filmmakers including Jane Campion, Paolo Sorrentino, Adam McKay, Zack Snyder, Nora Fingscheidt, Joe Wright, Antoine Fuqua and Shawn Levy. It also called attention to directorial debuts from Halle Berry and Lin-Manuel Miranda. These were examples named in the announcement, not a complete roster of the people involved across the slate.
The stars Netflix cited included Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Meryl Streep, Zendaya, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Gal Gadot, Dave Bautista, Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal, John David Washington and Octavia Spencer. The lineup also drew on recognizable franchises, adaptations and original stories, so the preview appealed to viewers looking for both familiar properties and new films.

Why the announcement was not a final release calendar
The slate PDF supplied title-level information, selected dates, genres and creative credits, but it explicitly described itself as being for planning purposes. Some of its titles were marked as non-English-language, while others were marked as not available globally. A preview date or title listing therefore did not guarantee a final release date or worldwide availability.
The announcement’s weekly framing described Netflix’s plan for 2021, not a verified count of films that ultimately premiered that year. Neither the preview nor its planning document establishes a final audited release total. Catalog availability also varies by country and changes over time, so the historical slate alone cannot confirm whether a particular movie is on Netflix where you watch today.

Netflix’s later viewing figures
In its January 20, 2022 shareholder letter, Netflix reported viewing in hours for several films from the 2021 slate. These are company-reported hours viewed, not independent audience counts or ticket sales. Netflix’s standard measure covers a title’s first 28 days; the letter used a shorter window for titles that had been out for fewer than 28 days, counting from launch through January 18, 2022.
| Film | Netflix-reported hours viewed | Measurement window noted in the letter |
|---|---|---|
| Red Notice | 364 million | First four weeks |
| Don’t Look Up | 353 million | Launch through January 18, 2022; it had not yet reached 28 days |
| The Unforgivable | 215 million | Standard first-28-days measure |
| Army of Thieves | 158 million | Standard first-28-days measure |
| Love Hard | 134 million | Standard first-28-days measure |
| Back to the Outback | 105 million | Standard first-28-days measure |
| The Harder They Fall | 122 million | Standard first-28-days measure |
The figures indicate how Netflix described viewing for selected titles at the time of its 2022 letter. They are not comparable to box-office admissions, and the shorter Don’t Look Up window is not the same as a full first-28-days total. Netflix’s letter also mentioned that its Play Something feature had been introduced first on Amazon Fire TV devices; that device connection is not a requirement for watching the films.
