The Rip, Joe Carnahan’s crime thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, is streaming globally on Netflix, according to Netflix Tudum. The story puts a Miami police team under pressure after officers find $24 million in a run-down stash house—and have to count it before they can leave.
What is The Rip about?
The film follows Miami cops whose trust in one another begins to fray after they discover a large cash stash. Netflix’s synopsis gives the amount as $24 million; Tudum says the officers must count the money before leaving the scene. Outside attention and growing suspicion intensify the pressure on the team.

The title has a specific meaning in the film’s setting. Carnahan told Tudum that “the rip” is Miami police parlance for taking a suspect’s property; officers may also use the term for a cash or drug seizure.
Who made the film, and who is in the cast?
Carnahan wrote and directed The Rip. It was produced by Artists Equity, the artist-led studio founded by Damon and Affleck. The pair star alongside Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, Nestor Carbonell, Lina Esco and Scott Adkins, according to Netflix Tudum and Netflix’s title page.

Is The Rip based on a true story?
Carnahan said the story grew in part from a deeply personal experience shared by a friend who was a father and head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade Police Department. That supports describing the film as inspired in part by an experience—not as a full account of a verified case. Carnahan also cited his appreciation for classic police thrillers, including Serpico, Prince of the City and Heat, as influences.

The project was first announced by Netflix in July 2024 under the title RIP, with Carnahan attached as writer-director and Damon and Affleck named among the cast. By its 2026 release coverage, Netflix styled the title The Rip. The initial announcement said the logline was still under wraps.
