Neil Sedaka, the singer-songwriter behind “Calendar Girl,” “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” and other enduring pop hits, died on February 27, 2026, at age 86, the Associated Press reported. His family announced his death that day on his official website.
What Sedaka’s family said
In a remembrance published on February 27, 2026, Sedaka’s family wrote: “Our family is devastated by the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Neil Sedaka.” The statement described the loss as sudden but did not provide further details.
What was Neil Sedaka’s cause of death?
The Associated Press’s initial report on February 27 said further details were not immediately available. On March 19, 2026, the Los Angeles Times later reported that Sedaka’s cause of death was atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. That cause is attributed to the newspaper’s later report, not to the family’s initial announcement.

His early hits and songwriting partnership
Sedaka came up in the Brill Building songwriting scene and wrote with Howard Greenfield, his boyhood neighbor and a lyricist. The Associated Press reports that Sedaka had 10 records in the Top 10 from 1959 through 1962. Among the hits from that era were “Calendar Girl,” “Oh! Carol,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” and “Next Door to an Angel.”
“Calendar Girl” became one of the songs most closely associated with Sedaka, but it was part of a broader run of popular records. His best-known repertoire also included “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” which reached No. 1 in its original, up-tempo 1962 recording.

A 1970s comeback—and a second No. 1
As the British Invasion reshaped pop in the 1960s, Sedaka spent years away from chart success. His fortunes revived in the 1970s after Elton John signed him to Rocket Records. The Associated Press identifies “Bad Blood” and “Laughter in the Rain” among Sedaka’s later hits.
He also returned to “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” in a slower ballad arrangement. That 1975 rerecording reached No. 1, giving the song a second chart-topping life in a markedly different style.
