The six-episode HBO season premiered April 20, 2025. Its simulations and role-play dramatize questions about cockpit communication; they are not evidence that the show validated a safety intervention.
What The Rehearsal Season 2 is about
The season’s stated project is to help pilots and copilots speak more openly, against the show’s explored premise that a first officer’s reluctance to challenge a captain can matter in an aviation emergency. The Peabody Awards described the six-episode season as “a Rube Goldberg contraption intended to improve airline safety by helping pilots and copilots speak more openly,” and named it a 2025 winner (Peabody Awards profile). That description captures the ambition, not a measured result: the available accounts do not establish that the season improved pilot communication or reduced accidents.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced the season on February 27, 2025, and set its HBO premiere for April 20, 2025 (Warner Bros. Discovery announcement). Its documentary-like scenes are interwoven with staged encounters and constructed environments, so what appears on screen should not automatically be read as an unmediated record of real aviation practice.
How Fielder built the season
Rather than rely on ordinary interviews, the production uses elaborate simulations and role-play to stage the season’s questions. The Guardian describes an airport recreation, a shy commercial pilot shadowed by actors, and a staged reenactment of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s infancy (The Guardian). TV Guide reports a full recreation of Houston airport, flight simulations, real pilots recruited to tell stories and judge a fake singing contest, and actors trained in Fielder’s approach observing and mirroring pilots (TV Guide).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those accounts support calling the season unusually constructed and performative. They do not establish its budget or show that the simulations constitute validated aviation research. The set-ups function as television: they make communication, performance and response visible while blurring the border between documentary observation and staged scene.
The show’s recursive production
The constructions also make Fielder’s own role part of the subject. In The Atlantic, critic Shirley Li reads the season as asking whether a comedian known for trolling can help people without mocking them, and whether sincerity is possible for him (The Atlantic). That is Li’s interpretation, not a verified statement of Fielder’s intent. The distinction matters: the season’s staged experiments invite viewers to examine not only what participants do, but also who designed the situation and what the performance asks of them.

Sully Sullenberger’s memoir and the reenactment thread
The Atlantic reports that Fielder reads Sullenberger’s memoir and uses it to motivate an increasingly literal effort to recreate formative parts of his life. The book is Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, by Chesley B. Sullenberger. In the season, the memoir connects the aviation-safety theme to a personal history that the production attempts to rebuild. It is a memoir, not flight training or an aviation-safety manual.
What the season does—and does not—establish about aviation safety
The season dramatizes a theory about cockpit communication: that a copilot may hesitate to challenge a captain, and that more open communication could matter for safety. The published accounts describe the show’s premise and production, not a controlled assessment of a safety intervention. No independently published statistic in these accounts establishes improved pilot communication or fewer aviation accidents as a result of the season.

That boundary helps make sense of the format. Flight simulations, airport sets, actors and real pilots create situations for television; their presence does not by itself make the resulting scenes a representative sample of aviation practice or a validated test. The Peabody recognition honors the season, but it should not be mistaken for evidence of a measured safety effect.
Participant consent and the ethics of staged reality
Fielder’s format deliberately blurs documentary and performance. Viewers can see a staged contest or an elaborate recreation, but that does not establish what every participant understood before taking part. The Guardian notes that manipulation and false representation have been recurring criticisms of Fielder’s work. TV Guide also places the season against criticism of the first season’s treatment of participants and child actors.

The Guardian reported that participant Lana Love alleged she lost $10,000 and was misled into thinking the staged singing competition was a real contest. This is Love’s allegation as reported by the newspaper; the account cited here does not independently establish her evidence, a production response, or related legal records. It should not be generalized into a claim that every participant was deceived or harmed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who made the season
The Peabody profile lists Nathan Fielder as creator, showrunner, executive producer, director, writer and talent. It names Dave Paige, Eric Notarnicola, Dan McManus and Christie Smith as executive producers, with Carrie Kemper and Kris Eber as co-executive producers. That concentration of roles fits a season in which the construction of the experiment—and the maker’s presence inside it—are central to what viewers see.
