Natalie Barr left a Sunrise broadcast early on 20 September 2023 to attend her younger son Hunter’s final school assembly. She said she had one more interview before heading out, and co-host Monique Wright took over for the rest of the programme.
Why did Natalie Barr leave Sunrise early?
Barr told viewers the day was a major family milestone. 7NEWS reported her saying: “Today is a big day for me. It’s our last son’s last school assembly.” She explained that she was leaving to attend Hunter’s final assembly.

When co-host Matt Shirvington asked how Hunter was feeling, Barr replied: “Yeah he’s feeling good but it’s scary. HSC is coming up in NSW – 11 October all that starts, but last day of school, we all remember that don’t we?” The reports mention the approaching NSW Higher School Certificate, but provide no further details about the family’s plans or Hunter’s feelings.
What happened during the broadcast?
Barr said she had one more interview before leaving: “So I’m about to take off. Just got one more interview after this.” She then missed the remainder of that broadcast, with Monique Wright filling in. 7NEWS and PerthNow both reported the exchange on 20 September 2023: 7NEWS’s account and PerthNow’s report.

Was this a departure from Sunrise?
No. The reports describe Barr leaving one broadcast early, not leaving her presenting role. Apple TV’s Australian Sunrise listing, accessed 8 October 2026, names Barr and Matt Shirvington as hosts and includes 2026 episodes. A programme catalogue listing provides current context, rather than proof of every broadcast detail.

This is a dated account of a specific broadcast in September 2023, not a report of a new departure. AAP FactCheck reported on 22 June 2026 that false AI-generated stories about Barr had circulated on social media; that unrelated activity does not change what the contemporaneous 7NEWS and PerthNow reports say about this broadcast.
