Kushina Uzumaki is Naruto’s mother, but her story is more than the tragedy of his birth. Displaced from Uzushio, she became the Nine Tails’ jinchūriki, found love with Minato, and made choices that shaped Naruto’s life. Here are ten manga-grounded facts about her. Who is Kushina Uzumaki?
Kushina is an Uzumaki from Uzushio who was brought to Konohagakure as a child and became the second jinchūriki of the Nine Tails. She later married Minato Namikaze and became Naruto’s mother. The official retrospective anchors key parts of her story in the manga, especially Naruto Volume 53, chapters 498 and 500–504.

3. “Tomato” became “Red-Hot Habanero”
Other students teased Kushina as “tomato,” mocking her face and red hair. She answered forcefully, earning the nickname “Red-Hot Habanero.” The name began as a label for her fiery temperament, not a reference to a special power.
4. Mito helped her bear the burden of being a jinchūriki
Mito Uzumaki was the jinchūriki Kushina was to succeed. She helped Kushina face the loneliness and pressure of carrying the Nine Tails while adjusting to life in Konoha after Uzushio’s destruction. Mito’s support connected the two women across generations of the same burden.

5. Minato rescued her after an abduction
Hidden Cloud shinobi abducted Kushina to obtain the Nine Tails’ chakra. She left strands of her red hair along the route as a trail. Minato followed it and rescued her. The event changed the way Kushina saw both her hair and Minato: the feature she had resented had helped him find her.
6. Her red hair became a symbol of love and fate
Looking back on the rescue, Kushina connected her hair to meeting Minato and falling in love. In the official retrospective’s rendering of the manga dialogue, she says: “MY HATED RED HAIR HAD BROUGHT ME MY LOVE… MY HAIR BECAME MY RED DESTINY.” It is a metaphor for how she came to understand her past, not evidence that her hair had supernatural power.

7. She taught Minato sealing jutsu
Kushina taught Minato sealing jutsu during his visits. Her expertise mattered when the Nine Tails surged within her after she left the barrier: she and Minato worked together to restrain and reseal it. The episode presents Kushina as a capable shinobi with knowledge Minato relied on, not merely someone he protected.
8. She and Minato married and chose Naruto’s name
Kushina and Minato married and chose “Naruto” after the protagonist of one of Jiraiya’s novels. The official retrospective connects the naming passage to Volume 42, chapter 382. Kushina’s response to the name is reproduced as: “NARUTO… …IT’S A WONDERFUL NAME.”

9. She tried to protect her family after the Nine Tails was extracted
During Naruto’s birth, the weakened seal failed and the Nine Tails was extracted from Kushina. With little time left, she focused on protecting her newborn son and Minato. Minato chose to give his life to carry out the plan that sealed the beast’s power into Naruto; it was not Kushina acting alone. The official retrospective cites Volume 53, chapters 500–504 for this sequence.

Sixteen years after her death, Kushina’s chakra manifested while Naruto was training to control the Nine Tails. She supported him and told him what happened around his birth. Naruto told her he was glad to be her child, giving them a chance to meet through the chakra she had left behind.

Where to read the key chapters
The official retrospective points to Naruto Volume 53 for many of Kushina’s central moments: chapters 498 (“My Ma’s Red Hair”), 500 (“The Birth of Naruto”), 501 (“Nine Tails Attacks!!”), 503 (“Minato’s Reaper Death Seal!!”), and 504 (“Thank You”). It also cites Volume 42, chapter 382 (“The True Choice!!”) for the naming passage. Chapter titles and punctuation can vary by edition or translation.
