NCIS: Origins revisits the franchise’s early-1990s past through young Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Mike Franks—but the available official summaries don’t identify two specific lore changes. Calling them rewrites requires comparing what the prequel shows with what the original NCIS explicitly established. Until those scenes and earlier episodes are matched, “rewrite” is a claim to examine, not a confirmed fact.
What NCIS: Origins establishes
CBS describes NCIS: Origins as following a young Gibbs years before the events of NCIS, with Mark Harmon narrating the story (CBS’s series page). The first-season episode listing places Gibbs at a fledgling NCIS office at Camp Pendleton and identifies Mike Franks as its team leader (CBS Season 1 episodes).

The official Season 2 listing gives one further story point: Gibbs and Franks investigate a missing young Marine, and the synopsis says Lala’s fate is revealed (CBS Season 2 episodes). That establishes the broad setting and some character developments. It does not name the two purported lore changes or show that either conflicts with the original series.
When does a prequel change count as a rewrite?
A prequel can add information without overturning canon. To establish a genuine continuity rewrite, a comparison needs to show what the original series explicitly said or depicted, what Origins later shows or states, and whether the two accounts cannot both be true.

- Contradiction: The earlier series establishes one version of an event, while the prequel depicts an incompatible version.
- Added context: The prequel supplies motives, relationships, or details that the earlier account left open.
- Narrowed account: New material qualifies a broad earlier statement without necessarily contradicting it.
Calling a detail a rewrite without identifying both the original episode or line and the corresponding Origins scene risks treating an addition as a retcon.
Which two pieces of lore are supposedly affected?
The official CBS descriptions reviewed do not identify them. The Season 2 synopsis confirms that Lala’s fate becomes part of the story, but it does not establish what earlier NCIS canon said about that fate or whether the prequel contradicts it. The Camp Pendleton setting and Franks’s leadership are likewise context, not proof of a continuity change.
Without the two specific claims and their supporting episode scenes, it is not possible to responsibly state what the original version was, what Origins changed, or how Gibbs, Franks, or another character is affected. The headline’s “best characters” wording is an opinion about the franchise’s appeal, not a verifiable ranking.
