The premise gives the team room for undercover tension and wedding-day comedy, while the episode’s more interesting question is how Torres and Knight’s close, sibling-like bond fits alongside the history between Knight and Jimmy Palmer.
What happens in “For Better or Worse”?
In the episode’s official premise, NCIS stages a fake wedding for two team members as part of an attempt to take down the mob. A TV Insider preview published before the episode aired says Torres has been undercover to infiltrate the gang. Together, those details frame the wedding as an investigative cover—not a real marriage between Torres and Knight.

Is the fake-wedding trope a good fit?
A staged wedding is a familiar undercover device, but it can do more than provide a disguise: it puts the team in a conspicuous, emotionally charged setting while the operation is underway. Here, the premise connects the wedding directly to the mob investigation, and Torres’s undercover assignment supplies a reason for the team to build a cover around him. The device works best when the comedy grows out of the agents’ behavior and the cover creates pressure for the investigation, rather than becoming a separate gag.

#1 Best Overall
Actor and director Rocky Carroll told TV Insider, “Vance is sort of the father of the bride.” That image captures the episode’s opportunity for team-centered humor: a covert operation can still draw the whole group into the rituals and roles of a wedding. Whether the balance lands in practice depends on how naturally those moments play against the case.
What does the episode say about Torres and Knight?
The fake-wedding setup can invite romantic assumptions, but the available episode descriptions and critical comments do not establish Torres and Knight as a couple. Rotten Tomatoes’ excerpt from Fangirlish instead describes their connection as sibling-like and says the episode reaffirms that bond. The wedding is the operation’s cover; it should not be treated as evidence of a real Torres–Knight marriage or romance.
Rank #2
That distinction gives the relationship material room to work without forcing a love story onto the premise. A close friendship can carry affection, teasing, and loyalty, while the episode also has to account for Knight’s past relationship with Jimmy Palmer. Carroll discussed the interplay among Knight, Torres, and Jimmy with TV Insider, making that wider emotional context part of the episode’s appeal.
Does Torres’s undercover freelancing help or hurt the team?
Torres’s infiltration gives the wedding sting a clear operational purpose, but working undercover also raises a team-trust question: how much can he do independently before his choices become a liability? The critics’ excerpts point to different sides of that tension. CBR’s Brittany Frederick praises the comedy when it feels natural; TV Fanatic’s Carissa Pavlica objects to Torres freelancing without telling his team. Those are individual critical reactions, not a shared verdict or an audience poll.

That disagreement identifies a useful standard for judging the episode: Torres’s independence should create meaningful risk or character tension, not merely leave the rest of NCIS out of the loop for convenience. The wedding device and his undercover work are strongest when they keep the investigation and the relationships connected.
