Spoilers for My Old Ass (2024). Old Elliott is presented as the 39-year-old version of 18-year-old Elliott, but the film never explains whether she appears through time travel, a mushroom-trip vision, or something between the two. She warns that Chad will die after they fall in love. Young Elliott chooses to be with him anyway—not because she can prevent the loss, but because fear of a possible future should not erase what matters in the present.
What happens at the end of My Old Ass?
After a mushroom trip, 18-year-old Elliott meets a woman who identifies herself as Elliott at 39. The older version warns her to stay away from Chad, the young man she is becoming close to. Elliott presses for the reason, and Old Elliott tells her that she and Chad fall deeply in love, but he dies. She says Elliott cannot save him; the screenplay does not name a cause of death.

The warning does not persuade young Elliott to abandon Chad. She tells him she really likes him and kisses him. The film ends with Chad alive and included in her family’s ordinary life, rather than showing the predicted death or explaining how Old Elliott appeared. Old Elliott’s parting message tells Elliott not to live for her, for the future, or by remaining stuck in the past.
Was Old Elliott real?
Within the story’s premise, Old Elliott is Elliott’s future self. The film leaves the mechanics of their meeting unresolved: it does not confirm literal time travel, establish that Old Elliott is only a psychedelic vision, or rule out a more ambiguous, magical-realist reading. The useful distinction is between who she is in the story—Elliott at 39—and how she can appear to her younger self, which the film does not settle.

Can Chad see Old Elliott?
When Old Elliott leaves, Chad asks young Elliott, “Is she okay?” That line leaves open whether he saw or otherwise noticed Old Elliott. It does not explain what he perceived or prove that she was physically present in a way others could see. The film offers a suggestive detail, not a definitive answer.
What happens to Chad?
At the film’s ending, Chad is alive and with young Elliott. Old Elliott predicts that he will die after they fall in love, and says the younger Elliott cannot save him. The story does not show his death or identify its cause; claims that he dies of a particular illness go beyond what the screenplay establishes.

Why does Elliott choose Chad despite the warning?
The choice is not based on believing Chad is secretly bad or that the warning is false. Elliott cannot find anything wrong with him, and Old Elliott’s warning is about his death, not wrongdoing. Young Elliott recognizes that avoiding a relationship to escape future grief would also mean giving up a connection that matters now.
That is not a promise that love will end happily, nor a claim that Elliott can change the future. It is a decision to live through uncertainty instead of letting anticipated pain dictate the present. Old Elliott’s final message makes that idea explicit: a life cannot be lived solely for the future or in thrall to the past.

Why does the film end at the lake?
Director Megan Park said the film originally ended with a voiceover monologue, but it no longer felt right during editing. She and the editor changed the ending to return to Elliott driving the boat around the lake; Park said that image felt like a goodbye to the lake and “just felt better.” The lake ending keeps the emphasis on a lived moment and a farewell, rather than adding a speech that would resolve the film’s ambiguity.
Park has described the story as growing from the familiar wish to tell your younger self something important: “I was fantasizing about something I think we all do, wondering what I would go back and tell my younger self if I had the chance,” she told the Sundance Institute. That reflective premise helps explain why the older Elliott’s message matters more than a technical explanation of how she traveled—or appeared—across time.
