The Oklahoma medical examiner ruled that 16-year-old Nex Benedict died by suicide. Later reporting on the full autopsy report identified the cause of death as combined toxicity of diphenhydramine and fluoxetine. Benedict died on February 8, 2024, the day after a fight at Owasso High School; that sequence does not establish that the fight caused their death.
What did the medical examiner determine?
The medical examiner’s office released a summary finding on March 13, 2024. Public Radio Tulsa reported that it said Benedict likely died by suicide after consuming two types of medication. Coverage of the full autopsy report, released March 27, identified the cause as combined toxicity of diphenhydramine and fluoxetine.
The full-report coverage also said the report described depression, anxiety and self-harm. KGOU reported that it included this sentence: “Handwritten notes that are suggestive of self- harm were found in the decedent’s room by family and provided to law enforcement.” The report’s wording does not establish what the notes said.
How did the school fight relate to Benedict’s death?
The fight occurred in a bathroom at Owasso High School on February 7, 2024. Public Radio Tulsa reported that Benedict was suspended after the fight. They died the next day at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, at about 4:30 p.m., according to the outlet.

The fight preceded Benedict’s death, but the medical determination reported by Public Radio Tulsa and KGOU identified suicide and medication toxicity—not the fight—as the manner and cause of death. Timing alone does not show that one caused the other.
In police video described by the Associated Press, Benedict told an officer that they poured water on the other students before the altercation and that all three came at them. This is Benedict’s account as recorded in the video, not an independently adjudicated finding. KGOU’s coverage of the autopsy report also noted head injuries, facial cuts and bruising consistent with resuscitation. Those details do not, by themselves, establish that the fight caused the death.

Kunzweiler described the fight as “an instance of mutual combat.” His decision concerned whether to file criminal charges; it did not decide any civil claim. The latest legal decision covered in the reporting cited here is the March 21, 2024, no-charge announcement, so it should not be read as a statement about later legal developments.
How should the case be described?
Benedict was nonbinary, and reporting identified them as 16 years old. Use they/them pronouns. Their family called for school reforms aimed at respect, inclusion and preventing bullying and hate. Those concerns are important context, but they should be attributed to the family rather than presented as the medical examiner’s finding about what caused Benedict’s death.
