What to know about the major releases
Wednesday Season 2 arrives in two parts
Part 1 was listed for August 6, while Part 2 was planned for September 3. The whole season, therefore, was not an August release. Netflix’s guide describes Wednesday returning to Nevermore Academy to confront a new supernatural mystery alongside complications involving family, friends and old adversaries. Co-showrunners and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said, “This season, Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore.”
In its August 12, 2025 Top 10 report, Netflix said Part 1 recorded 50 million views for the week covered and ranked No. 1 on the English TV list. That is a weekly figure and ranking attributed to that report, not a lifetime total or an indication of the show’s current popularity: Netflix Top 10.

The Thursday Murder Club brings a novel’s sleuths to the screen
Listed for August 28, the film follows Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim and Joyce, four residents of the Coopers Chase retirement community who investigate cold cases for fun. When a death close to home gives them a real mystery, their hobby takes on new urgency. Netflix identifies the film as based on Richard Osman’s novel of the same name. Chris Columbus directed; the principal quartet is played by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie. See Netflix’s film details and cast information.
In Netflix’s September 2, 2025 Top 10 report, the film debuted at No. 2 on the English Film list with 24.7 million views for the week covered. This is a weekly result reported at that time, not a lifetime or current viewership total: Netflix Top 10.

Osman described what the characters find in their relationships: “All four of the members of the Thursday Murder Club find new things in these friendships.” Mirren, who plays Elizabeth, said the story recognizes that “people who are in retirement homes very often have very powerful pasts, and they’re still as engaged and as active and as intelligent as they always were.” These comments appear in Netflix’s interview with the cast and author.
My Oxford Year and Fixed round out the film highlights
Netflix’s summer movie guide lists My Oxford Year for August 1. Its central character, Anna, is an ambitious American who travels to Oxford to pursue a childhood dream and meets a local who changes her plans. The guide names Iain Morris as director and Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest among the cast.

Which August release should you start with?
The clearest distinction is format and timing: Wednesday is a series released in two parts across August and September, while The Thursday Murder Club, My Oxford Year and Fixed are individual films. Choose Wednesday for a continuing supernatural mystery, or one of the films for a single-feature watch. The available official listings establish dates and premises, but do not provide a basis for ranking the titles by quality or declaring this a complete monthly slate.
