The Bibliothèque nationale de France identified a 44-page notebook from Mozart’s 1778 Paris stay that contains composition exercises and seven short pieces for flute and harp. It is not a newly discovered, wholly Mozart-authored composition: the notebook records lessons, with Mozart’s and his pupil’s contributions interwoven. Six of the seven pieces are complete, according to the BnF.
What was found in Mozart’s notebook?
The manuscript is an anonymous, untitled late-18th-century music notebook. The BnF says it contains composition exercises and seven pieces for flute and harp; six pieces are complete. The final exercise is unfinished, and the notebook’s last six pages are blank. The BnF describes it as the earliest evidence it has of this kind of teaching material.
The discovery is significant partly because it offers a glimpse of music instruction and collaboration, not simply another finished work to add to Mozart’s catalogue. In the notebook, the pupil’s and teacher’s contributions are interwoven, and some exercises are entirely in the pupil’s hand.
Is the newly discovered music really by Mozart?
The BnF’s attribution rests on examination by manuscript specialists. On 2 February 2026, François-Pierre Goy, a curator responsible for the BnF Music Department’s pre-1800 collections, recognized Mozart’s handwriting while examining the notebook. Mozart manuscript specialist Laurence Decobert confirmed the attribution, and Armin Brinzing, director of the Bibliotheca Mozartiana in Salzburg, authenticated the notebook in April 2026. The BnF announced the discovery on 19 June 2026. Read the BnF’s announcement.

That attribution does not mean Mozart wrote every passage in the notebook. The BnF identifies it as a shared teaching document, with work by both Mozart and his pupil. Gilles Pécout, president of the BnF, called it “one of the most important discoveries in recent decades”; that is the institution’s assessment, rather than an independent ranking.
Who was Mozart teaching in Paris?
The BnF associates the lessons with Marie-Louise-Philippine de Bonnières de Guînes (1759–1795), an accomplished harpist and daughter of the Duc de Guînes. It says the French paper and the exercises and pieces point to a teaching context. The lessons were suspended when she married on 26 July 1778.

The notebook therefore connects Mozart’s Paris period with practical instruction for a harpist, while its flute-and-harp pieces reflect the instrumentation of a separate work he composed during the same stay.
How does the notebook relate to K. 299?
The BnF says the Duc de Guînes commissioned Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, K. 299, during the same Paris period, between May and July 1778. Both K. 299 and the notebook involve flute and harp, but they are different kinds of material:

| Work | Authorship and function | What the BnF reports |
|---|---|---|
| Newly identified notebook | Teaching material with interwoven contributions by Mozart and his pupil | Seven short flute-and-harp pieces; six are complete |
| Concerto for Flute and Harp, K. 299 | A separately named concerto, commissioned by the Duc de Guînes | Composed during Mozart’s Paris stay between May and July 1778 |
The BnF also gives a provenance account linking the notebook to a French copy of K. 299: the two documents carry the same stamps. It says they belonged to two packets of music confiscated from the Duke’s residence on Rue de Varenne on 4 May 1794, then added to the Library’s collections the following year. This is the BnF’s account of the documents’ history.
When was the notebook discovered and performed?
Goy recognized Mozart’s handwriting on 2 February 2026, and Brinzing authenticated the notebook in April. The BnF announced its first public performance for 21 June 2026 in the Salle Ovale at its Richelieu site. The performance was by Orchestre Philharmonique Radio France musicians Mathilde Caldérini, flute, and Nicolas Tulliez, harp. The BnF also announced a France Musique broadcast on 22 June 2026; both dates have passed. Current replay availability has not been established.

Is this the same “new Mozart” discovered in 2021?
No. The 2021 story concerned an Allegro in D major for piano, K. 626b/16, whose autograph the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation said it had acquired after it had been in private possession since the late 1920s. The foundation presented that single-sheet piano work on 27 January 2021. The BnF’s 2026 discovery is a Paris teaching notebook with shared contributions and flute-and-harp music, not the same manuscript or piece. The Mozarteum Foundation’s account of the 2021 discovery.
Can you listen to the new Mozart pieces?
The BnF announced a public premiere and a France Musique broadcast in June 2026, but current access to a replay has not been verified. The discovery announcement establishes that six of the seven short pieces are complete; it does not establish whether they have been commercially published. Mozart’s K. 299 is a related flute-and-harp work, but its score is not an edition of the newly identified notebook.
