The prediction centered on two tentpoles arriving a day apart: the NFL streamer’s first Christmas Day doubleheader on December 25 and Squid Game Season 2’s global premiere on December 26. Netflix later reported large audiences for the football games, but those figures do not establish that the entire week ranked among the service’s biggest by a consistent annual measure.
What the headline meant
Andy Meek’s BGR article appeared on December 20, 2024. Its “next week” meant Christmas week 2024, and its claim was an editorial forecast based on a pair of prominent events—not a published comparison ranking Netflix’s weeks. The article even described the week as relatively light in release volume, while arguing that the two headline events made it unusually significant. BGR’s December 20 preview

Squid Game returned
Netflix announced a global December 26 premiere for Season 2. In the announcement, it also said Season 3 was planned as the final season and would arrive in 2025; that was the plan stated at the time. Netflix’s Season 2 announcement
In a promotional interview in Seoul, actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, told BGR, “I never imagined that we’d make a second season.” He also described the writing process as daunting and praised the script, saying he often thought director Hwang Dong-hyuk was a genius. What the reported NFL audiences show
Netflix’s post-event reports indicated substantial audiences. The figures below are reported measurements, not independently recalculated here; US average-minute audience (AMA) and global AMA are distinct measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Measure | Reported figure | Attribution and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Unduplicated US viewers on Christmas Day | Nearly 65 million | Netflix reported the Nielsen figure in 2024. Its AMA methodology used Nielsen Fast National Live + Same Day data, including out-of-home and CBS local-market viewing, plus Netflix and NFL+ mobile and web data. |
| US AMA: Ravens-Texans | 24.3 million | Nielsen figure cited by Netflix on December 26, 2024. Netflix called the game the most-streamed NFL game in US history. |
| US AMA: Chiefs-Steelers | 24.1 million | Nielsen figure cited by Netflix on December 26, 2024. Netflix called the game the second-most-streamed NFL game in US history. |
| Global AMA: Chiefs-Steelers | 30.0 million | Netflix-reported global measure on December 31, 2024. |
| Global AMA: Ravens-Texans | 31.3 million | Netflix-reported global measure on December 31, 2024. |
Netflix also said the two games ranked first and second on its Global Top 10 for the week. The US and global figures come from separate reports and measurement approaches, so they are useful as attributed snapshots of the event’s reach—not as a direct comparison with Squid Game viewership. The two events represented different kinds of attention: a new season of a scripted global hit and a live sports broadcast with audience figures Netflix later publicized. Their proximity gave the week a strong programming storyline, with football on Christmas Day and the series premiere the next day.

The available figures support the scale of the NFL broadcasts. They do not provide a comparable, same-method audience measure for Squid Game Season 2, nor a consistent metric that ranks the whole week against every other Netflix week in 2024. “One of the biggest” is therefore best understood as the preview’s judgment about the lineup and its potential significance, rather than a verified annual ranking.
