Infinite Reality announced on March 25, 2025, that it had entered a definitive agreement to acquire Napster for $207 million. The Associated Press reported the same day that Napster had been sold to Infinite Reality for that amount. The buyer said it wanted to reshape the music brand into a social, interactive platform, but the announcement described plans—not proof that those features launched.
Who bought Napster for $207 million?
Infinite Reality, an immersive-technology and entertainment company, announced the $207 million acquisition agreement on March 25, 2025. Its announcement said it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Napster. The Associated Press reported that day that Napster had been sold to Infinite Reality for $207 million.
Those descriptions should be kept distinct: Infinite Reality announced an agreement, while AP characterized the transaction as a sale. The sources do not state detailed closing terms, how assets were transferred, or a separate closing date.
Why did Infinite Reality want Napster?
Infinite Reality presented Napster as a recognizable music brand that could be expanded beyond conventional streaming. The acquisition announcement described Napster as a licensed music service with more than 110 million tracks, availability in 34 countries, and more than $1 billion cumulatively paid to artists and songwriters. These are figures reported by Infinite Reality in March 2025; the available sources do not provide an independent audit of them.

The company’s rationale was to connect music listening with social and immersive experiences. Napster CEO Jon Vlassopulos said in the announcement: “The internet has evolved from desktop to mobile, from mobile to social, and now we are entering the immersive era.” That statement explained the company’s outlook, not evidence that a new platform had already been delivered.
What did the buyer say it planned to build?
Infinite Reality outlined a broader set of proposed features around the Napster name. Its March 2025 announcement described plans for:

How did Napster become a licensed music service?
Napster began in 1999 as a peer-to-peer file-sharing service. After copyright litigation, it closed; Rhapsody acquired it in 2011 and relaunched it as a licensed streaming service, according to the Associated Press. Infinite Reality’s announcement also described the brand’s evolution from its 1999 origins into a licensed music service.

What is Napster now?
In a September 3, 2026, company announcement, Napster described itself as an AI company and announced its incorporation in Saudi Arabia. That is a later corporate positioning statement, separate from Infinite Reality’s 2025 acquisition announcement and its music-platform plans. The 2026 announcement alone does not show whether those plans were implemented or whether the music service remains available in its earlier form.
