The $525,000 vintage-toy auction record set by a rocket-firing Boba Fett at Heritage Auctions in May 2024 was surpassed later that year: Gizmodo reported that Goldin Auctions sold another rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype for $1.342 million. The Goldin figure was a rarer J-slot version, while Heritage’s was an L-slot example. These are historical auction results, not current market valuations; the available reporting does not establish whether a later sale has since set a new record.
How the record changed
| Date | Sale | Reported amount | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2010 | Diamond-wearing Barbie, cited by Heritage Auctions | $302,000 | Heritage identified it as the previous vintage-toy auction mark before its 2024 sale. Heritage Auctions |
| June 2022 | Rocket-firing Boba Fett, cited by Heritage Auctions | $236,000 | Heritage said this was the previous Star Wars action-figure auction record before its May 2024 result. Heritage Auctions |
| May 31, 2024 | Heritage Auctions’ rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype | $525,000 | Sold during Heritage’s Star Wars Signature Auction; Heritage said it more than doubled the previous Star Wars action-figure auction record and surpassed the cited vintage-toy mark. Heritage Auctions |
| Reported August 19, 2024 | Goldin Auctions’ J-slot rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype | $1.342 million | Gizmodo reported the sale and described the J-slot variant; a Goldin primary lot page was not available in the cited reporting. Gizmodo |
The reported Goldin result was more than twice Heritage’s $525,000 sale. The two high-profile prices should not be treated as directly comparable measures of a figure’s ordinary market value: each reflects a particular auction, item, and sale context. The cited reports do not establish a common price basis such as hammer price versus a total including buyer’s premium.
Why the J-slot and L-slot distinction matters
Heritage’s L-slot example
Heritage described its 2024 figure as a 3¾-inch, hand-painted, missile-firing prototype and one of only two surviving hand-painted figures pulled from Kenner’s production line in the 1970s. The report characterized the Heritage example as an L-slot version of the firing mechanism. Heritage Auctions; Gizmodo
Goldin’s J-slot example
Gizmodo described the later Goldin lot as a rarer J-slot prototype, an alternate version of the rocket-firing mechanism. Its report said roughly 100 prototypes are believed to survive—about 70 L-slot and 30 J-slot—and that only three J-slot mailer examples were known. Those numbers are attributed estimates, not a verified census. At the time of the report, the Goldin lot was described as the only known J-slot mailer example sold publicly. Gizmodo

Kenner planned to offer the rocket-firing Boba Fett as a mail-away promotion in 1979. Customers were meant to send proof of purchase for four other Star Wars figures to receive one. The firing prototype was pulled before release; Smithsonian Magazine reports that Kenner removed the launching mechanism over concerns that the projectile could pose a choking hazard. The retail Boba Fett did reach stores, but with the mechanism disabled. Heritage Auctions; Smithsonian Magazine

What the record does—and does not—tell collectors
- The $1.342 million amount is the sale reported for a specific J-slot prototype in 2024, not a general valuation for vintage Star Wars toys.
- The survivor counts are reported estimates rather than independently audited population figures.
- The 2024 Heritage and Goldin examples were prototypes with different mechanism variants; their prices do not establish the value of retail Boba Fett figures or other collectibles.
