A Minecraft Movie knows how to make its block-built world pop and gives Jack Black and Jason Momoa room to be silly. But while its imagery and performances provide plenty of amusement, its story is much more conventional than the game’s open-ended creativity. It is a better fit for families seeking a broad, playful adventure than for viewers hoping the film will feel like the freedom of playing Minecraft.
What kind of movie is A Minecraft Movie?
Directed by Jared Hess and based on the video game, A Minecraft Movie is a live-action fantasy comedy from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The official site describes it as the first big-screen live-action adaptation. Jason Momoa plays Garrett, nicknamed “The Garbage Man,” while Jack Black plays Steve; Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge also star. The film opened in North America on April 4, 2025, with international releases beginning April 2, according to the official movie site.
The premise sends four misfits through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a cubic realm shaped by imagination. They must find a way home, facing Piglins and Zombies along the way and working with Steve. That setup gives the movie an excuse to move through recognizable Minecraft imagery, but it also puts the characters on a fairly familiar quest rather than letting the story behave like a sandbox.
Does the Minecraft world make a satisfying movie?
The strongest appeal is the visual translation: the Overworld’s chunky geometry and familiar creatures give the film a distinct look, and its emphasis on imagination makes sense for a game built around making things. Yet a world that invites players to set their own goals is difficult to reproduce in a fixed story. Here, the game’s recognizable shapes and characters are more successful as a colorful setting than as a source of narrative freedom.

That mismatch is the central tension of the adaptation. The film celebrates creativity, but its plot follows a conventional path toward a climactic battle. If you want to see Minecraft’s visual vocabulary brought to a big-screen adventure, there is plenty to enjoy; if what you want is the experience of inventing your own way through the world, a scripted quest cannot offer the same thing.
How well do the comedy and performances work?
Jack Black’s Steve and Momoa’s Garrett are the film’s main comic engines. Their broad, playful energy helps the loose early stretch feel lively, and the contrast between their performances gives the adventure much of its momentum. The cast can make a simple gag or a familiar game reference entertaining even when the story itself is not doing anything surprising.

That energy does not entirely solve the film’s structural problem. The Associated Press review by Mark Kennedy characterizes the first half as loose and goofball before the movie moves into a conventional climactic battle. His verdict was “Running time: 101 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.” The shift is telling: the film is more comfortable playing around in its world than building a story with the same sense of possibility.
What have critics and audiences thought?
Rotten Tomatoes showed a 47% Tomatometer based on 195 reviews and an 84% Popcornmeter based on more than 10,000 verified ratings when checked in 2026. Those are separate aggregates, not a guarantee that critics or viewers share one opinion. The contrast does suggest a difference in reception: many audience raters responded more warmly than the critics represented in the Tomatometer.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the film as “a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks.” That captures the same split at the heart of the movie: the performances and setting are an easier sell than the familiar plot. Scores can change as ratings and reviews are added.
