Monster has returned with its fourth installment, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. Netflix announced on September 17, 2026, that the eight-episode drama was streaming; Ella Beatty stars as Borden. It dramatizes a disputed 1892 murder case, so it should not be treated as a documentary or an authoritative account of what happened.

What is the newest Monster season?

The current installment is Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the fourth chapter of Netflix’s anthology. Netflix’s September 17, 2026 announcement said it was now streaming. The Netflix title page lists it as an eight-episode 2026 drama.

The series is an anthology, not one continuous case narrative. Its earlier installments covered Ed Gein and the Menendez brothers; the latest turns to Lizzie Borden. Netflix identifies Ian Brennan as creator on the season page, while its anthology Media Center page credits Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan as creators of Monster.

Is it a true story or a documentary?

The season draws on the disputed case in which Borden was accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe in 1892. Netflix’s background article describes the series as fictionalized: Beatty and the creators shaped a dramatic character using details from Borden’s life. Scenes, dialogue, and motives presented onscreen are therefore dramatic interpretation, not proof of historical events.

Co-showrunner Ian Brennan described the creative lens as a contrast between the constraints of women’s lives in that period and Borden’s particular circumstances: “The job of the show was throwing into contrast this cage that any woman living in that time and that place would’ve felt — but particularly, this strange young girl who loved animals and who lived in a repressive household.” That is Brennan’s explanation of the show’s approach, not a historical finding.

How many people watched it?

Netflix reported 14.5 million views for the season on its English-language TV list for the week of September 21, 2026, and said the result was up 20% week over week. Those are Netflix’s figures for that specific weekly chart window, not a lifetime audience total or an independently measured count. The platform’s weekly Top 10 report is the source for the chart result.
