But Kevin and Harry are looking for insurance and an exit strategy, Richie makes a proposal, and Maeve makes a move of her own. The result, on the evidence available, is an episode built around a volatile contrast: a formal gathering on the surface, family business underneath.
What happens in “Funeral for a Friend”
The episode’s official synopsis puts contingency planning at its center: Kevin and Harry assess possible scenarios as they search for insurance and a way out. Elsewhere, Brendan approaches Seraphina, Bella and Jan commiserate, Richie makes a proposal, and Maeve strikes. The Los Angeles Times’ April 27, 2025 report identifies the funeral as Tommy Stevenson’s and describes the gathering as a temporary détente between the clans, with Maeve scheming behind Conrad’s back.

That combination gives the funeral more than a ceremonial function. It creates a setting where the families can appear to pause their conflict while still pursuing separate interests. The calm is temporary by design: the synopsis places negotiation and a concealed move alongside the public gathering.
Does Richie step up?
Richie’s proposal is the clearest plot signal that he is taking an active part in the episode’s business. It gives him a move to make rather than leaving him only as a figure in the family conflict. But the available episode synopsis does not explain the proposal’s terms or consequences, so it cannot establish how bold, persuasive, or decisive the moment is. “Steps up” is a fair question to bring to the episode; calling the performance a masterclass would require a more specific judgment than the documented details support.

A wake with theatrical undertones
Pierce Brosnan, speaking to Los Angeles Times reporter Emily Zemler about the wake scenes, called them “beautifully done” and said, “The whole piece has a theatricality — it was like doing a play.” He also described Helen Mirren’s approach to Maeve as “channeling Lady Macbeth,” pointing to the story’s Shakespearean undertones. Those are Brosnan’s impressions of the staging and Mirren’s characterization, not a critical consensus or an independent assessment of the whole episode.
The comparison is apt for the episode’s documented setup: a formal family occasion makes a useful stage for concealed intentions. Whether the scenes fully convert that contrast into sustained suspense depends on the performances and editing, which the synopsis and interview excerpts alone do not settle.

MobLand follows the Harrigan and Stevenson crime families, with fixer Harry Da Souza caught between them. “Funeral for a Friend” is Episode 5 of Season 1, which premiered on March 30, 2025. Paramount+ lists the series as a ten-episode crime drama and identifies itself as its exclusive streaming home.
Rotten Tomatoes’ season page showed a 77% Tomatometer from 44 reviews and a 68% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings when observed in 2026. Those are changeable, season-level figures—not an Episode 5 score—and should not be read as a verdict on this installment.

Verdict
“Funeral for a Friend” has a strong dramatic premise: a funeral briefly brings enemies together while survival planning, Richie’s proposal and Maeve’s concealed maneuvering keep the conflict alive. Its appeal rests on the tension between public ritual and private calculation. The episode’s official synopsis supports that reading, while the available reporting offers a glimpse of its theatrical staging; neither is enough to certify Richie’s turn as a masterclass.
