It follows Jérémie, who returns to a French village for the funeral of his former employer, the baker, and stays with the man’s widow. What begins as a visit becomes an unsettling story of desire, suspicion and village relationships. The same word, miséricorde, also means compassion or mercy in French.
What is Miséricorde about?
Jérémie comes back to Saint-Martial for the funeral of the village baker, with whom he once worked. He stays at the home of Martine, the baker’s widow. A disappearance, a threatening neighbor and a priest with unusual intentions draw the visit into increasingly uneasy territory.
The film’s tension grows from the way private motives and small-community relationships overlap. Its setting is a village, but its focus is less on a mystery to solve than on the unsettling encounters that follow Jérémie’s return.
Who made the film, and who is in it?

Outside the film title, the French noun miséricorde means compassion toward people in distress and the act of relieving their suffering; it can also mean clemency or pardon. The Académie française’s ninth-edition entry, published in 2024, traces the word to the 12th century and Latin misericordia. In a separate, concrete sense, it names the projecting support at the back of a church-stall seat, used to lean on while standing during parts of a religious office.
