The first reactions to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning were divided over its story, not its ability to deliver spectacle. Critics praised the action and stunts, while some found the plot overcomplicated, exposition-heavy, or bloated. The Independent emphasized that split; the Associated Press, describing the film’s Cannes screening on May 14, 2025, said it drew “mostly good reviews.” So “disappointing” fits some individual verdicts—not a consensus, and not a new reaction cycle in 2026.
What is The Final Reckoning?
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the eighth Mission: Impossible film follows 2023’s Dead Reckoning. The Festival de Cannes described Ethan Hunt as facing an artificial intelligence called “The Entity” and presented the film as potentially the franchise’s final installment. The film premiered at Cannes on May 14, 2025; the Associated Press reported a North American theatrical release date of May 23, 2025. Festival de Cannes; Associated Press.
Were the first reactions actually mixed?
Yes, though outlets summarized the balance differently. Greg Evans of The Independent reported on May 14, 2025 that reactions praised the action but criticized the story, including some calling the film “incredibly bloated.” Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup collected both enthusiastic and critical responses. The Associated Press offered a more positive overall characterization of the Cannes screening, saying the film drew “mostly good reviews.” These are distinct descriptions of early reception, not a measurable positive-to-negative split: the cited roundups do not give a tally or percentage.
The reactions were also published at different moments around the premiere and release. They describe critics’ early responses in May 2025, not a current audience consensus or an up-to-date score.

What did critics praise about the action?
Action and stunt spectacle were the clearest point of agreement among positive reactions. Fandango’s Erik Davis called the film “astonishing” and praised two action scenes, according to The Independent. Courtney Howard, quoted in Variety’s May 14 roundup, called it an “exhilarating adrenaline rush” and praised its immersive stunts. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup quoted Sarah Gorr of The Spool, who said the ending might not satisfy every viewer but that the “glorious spectacle” was reason to see it on the biggest screen available.
Those comments support a specific takeaway: the set pieces were a major source of enthusiasm. They do not establish that every critic thought the action worked, or that the film’s story received the same praise.

Why did some critics call the story bloated?
The negative reactions focused on narrative complexity, exposition, pacing, and the number of plot threads and franchise callbacks being connected. Andrew J Salazar of Discussing Film, quoted by The Independent, said the visuals were “bogged down by an overtly complex script.” David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave a sharper verdict, describing the film as “dull and dysfunctional” in a way he had not thought the franchise capable of.
Not every mixed reaction amounted to a rejection. Variety quoted Kenzie Vanunu acknowledging that there was “a bit too much going on (at all times)” while still calling it a good time at the movies. Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture, in the Rotten Tomatoes roundup, described it as “a more mixed offering.” The divide was therefore not simply “good stunts versus no good in the film”; it was whether the scale and complexity of the story could keep pace with the spectacle.

Why did one reviewer call it a disappointing farewell?
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter, quoted in the Rotten Tomatoes roundup, called it “a disappointing farewell” on the condition that it would be the last film in a consistently entertaining franchise. That phrasing matters: it is one critic’s conditional judgment about a possible ending, not a settled declaration that the series is over or the uniform reaction to the movie.
At Cannes, Tom Cruise called the film “the culmination of three decades of work” when asked whether it was his last hurrah. The Associated Press also reported his response: “I’d rather just people see it and enjoy.” The film was presented as potentially final, but the cited coverage does not establish that Cruise or the filmmakers definitively ruled out another installment. How to read the early consensus
- For action: first reactions were often strongly positive about the stunts and visual spectacle.
- For story: some critics objected to the complexity, exposition, and crowded plot.
- For the overall verdict: outlets did not use one identical label—The Independent stressed mixed feelings, Rotten Tomatoes gathered praise and criticism, and AP described the Cannes response as mostly good.
That makes “mixed” a fair shorthand for the disagreement, but not a quantified consensus. “Disappointing” is best understood as an editorial or individual critic’s view, especially about the possibility of a finale, rather than a verdict shared by all early reviewers.
