The first A Minecraft Movie teaser, released in September 2024, drew sharp criticism from some fans over its live-action cast, realistic CGI and unusual blend of people and block-built scenery. But there was no single fan verdict: creator Markus “Notch” Persson said the trailer looked “surprisingly fun,” and the film’s later opening weekend showed that the early reaction did not tell the whole story.
Why the first trailer divided Minecraft fans
The teaser’s central visual choice was to put live-action performers into a digitally rendered Overworld. Some viewers objected to the contrast between human actors and Minecraft’s familiar blocky setting, while others criticized the realistic CGI and the trailer’s tone. Forbes described the blend as unsettling and reported comparisons to AI-generated imagery and poor greenscreen. One commenter quoted in that coverage argued that Minecraft would translate better to animation.

Those examples show the kinds of objections that circulated; they do not establish a representative fan consensus. The accessible coverage does not verify the exact sentence “It Looks Like They Ran Minecraft” as a verbatim fan quote. It is safest to treat that wording as a headline formulation, not an attributed statement from a particular person. Forbes’ account of the trailer response provides context for the criticism, but not a survey of viewers.
What the movie is—and what the trailer showed
A Minecraft Movie is a live-action adaptation directed by Jared Hess and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, with Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge. Its official premise follows four characters who pass through a portal into the Overworld and join Steve in trying to get home. Minecraft’s November 18, 2024 trailer article also introduced the adventurers, Overworld and mobs.

The official film site identifies it as the franchise’s first big-screen live-action adaptation. The theatrical release began internationally on April 2, 2025, followed by North American theaters and IMAX on April 4. The site now lists digital availability and physical editions in 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD; those listings confirm formats, not current retailer stock. Not everyone disliked the teaser
Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson reacted positively. In comments reported by PC Gamer on September 10, 2024, he wrote, “Ok I’m in,” called the transformation of his old project into a Hollywood movie “pretty surreal,” and said, “For a movie about a game with literally zero plot, it looks surprisingly fun.” Persson also distinguished his perspective as the game’s creator from that of players, so his enthusiasm should not be mistaken for a proxy for fan opinion. PC Gamer’s report attributes the remarks to his social posts.

How the film’s opening compared with the trailer backlash
The early objections did not, by themselves, predict the film’s later box office or audience response. The Associated Press reported on April 6, 2025, that studio estimates put the opening weekend at $157 million in the United States and Canada and $144 million internationally, for an estimated $301 million global debut. AP also reported a B+ CinemaScore and 4/5 stars in PostTrak exit polls. These are early-release figures reported at the time, not current lifetime totals or a measurement of trailer sentiment.
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chair and CEO Michael DeLuca told AP, “We made the movie for the fans and the fans exceeded our expectations.” The opening figures and exit-poll results offer evidence of a strong initial theatrical response, but they do not establish that every fan liked the movie—or that the original trailer’s critics changed their minds. The Associated Press report also quotes Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian saying, “Younger audiences love going to the movie theater, believe it or not.”

What the reaction does—and does not—show
- The criticism was specific: some viewers objected to the live-action actors, realistic CGI and the fit between those elements and Minecraft’s block-based world.
- The response was mixed: contemporary coverage documented negative reactions as well as Persson’s comparatively upbeat response.
- The headline phrase is not a verified quote: the accessible sources do not confirm that exact wording as a named fan’s statement.
- The film’s opening is a separate measure: its reported box office and audience scores describe the theatrical launch, not the scale or representativeness of the earlier online backlash.
