Mimi G’s account of finding love and hope after abuse is not a formula for recovery; it is her story of confronting painful experiences, learning her own value, and building a life that included creative work and a later happy relationship. In a 2019 interview with Lena Hansen for People en Español / PEOPLE Chica, the fashion and sewing educator described how therapy, self-knowledge, and boundaries helped her make sense of the past.
What Mimi G shared about abuse and homelessness
In the interview, Mimi Goodwin—known as Mimi G—said she was sexually abused as a child by her grandfather and uncle. She described the experiences as affecting her sense of safety and her relationships with men. These are her disclosures as reported by Lena Hansen; the profile does not offer a broader clinical or legal account.
The article recounts that Mimi ran away from home in Chicago at 15 amid turmoil involving an abusive relationship in her household. She followed a boyfriend and his family to California, and said that boyfriend was abusive, including while she was pregnant with her oldest daughter. She later became homeless in Los Angeles. Her mother helped care for the infant while Mimi worked to get back on her feet.
How she describes her marriages and later relationship
Earlier relationships
Mimi said she married for the first time at 19 and divorced two years later because her husband was violent. She described her second marriage, which began when she was 27, as a ten-year relationship with a decent man. During that relationship, she learned her own value, but did not feel ready for that degree of commitment.

Meeting Norris Danta Ford
At the time of the 2019 profile, Mimi was newly married to Norris Danta Ford, who was also described as her business partner. She said she met him while being fully herself, and that their relationship grew from friendship. “When I met my current husband I was completely myself,” she told Hansen. She added: “When you are in that space you are able to love fully. We became friends, lovers and now husband and wife.”
Her account presents that marriage as a happy later chapter in her life, not as a guaranteed result of healing or a measure of anyone else’s recovery.

Therapy, forgiveness, and boundaries in her account
Mimi said therapy and a breakdown helped her deal with emotions connected to earlier events. She also spoke about forgiveness in terms of her own experience: “I forgave them because heartbreak does more damage to you if you don’t forgive, but that doesn’t mean I need to be around you or bring my children around you.” In her telling, forgiveness did not require renewed contact or access to her children. That is her personal view, not a prescription for survivors.
Sewing as refuge and creative work
Sewing was part of Mimi’s life well before it became her work. She recalled developing an interest in it early and said her father bought her a sewing machine when she was around 12. She described making clothes as a refuge during painful periods; later, that interest connected to her fashion work and sewing education.
Mimi founded Sew It Academy and taught sewing. In the interview, she said, “I have taught thousands of people how to sew.” That number is her statement, not an independently verified count. The academy’s course listings can be viewed at Sew It Academy; its offerings may change.
What Mimi said about hope and growing older
Mimi reflected on how her perspective changed with age: “I used to fear the 40s, but I’m living my best life in my 40s. You grow, you mature.” She also framed her story as evidence that circumstances can change, saying: “When I look back at my life, it is a testimony that no matter what your current circumstance is you can always change the direction of your life. You have to have enough resilience to be able to move beyond that.”

Those words belong to her own reflection on her life. The interview documents one person’s painful history and the choices and relationships she described afterward; it does not suggest that healing follows a single path or timetable.
