In remarks reported in February 2023, he said he was proud of the first two seasons and did not blame Netflix for deciding the investment was not justified. That later explanation followed an earlier period of uncertainty in 2019, when Fincher said he was exhausted and unsure he could take on Season 3.
Why did Netflix not make Mindhunter Season 3?
Fincher tied the decision to the relationship between the show’s cost and its audience. TVLine reported his February 2023 remarks from an interview with the French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche: “I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for Season 3],” TVLine reported. The bracketed reference to Season 3 is an editorial clarification in TVLine’s English rendering.

Fincher’s comment is the most direct public account of why the series did not proceed. It does not provide a budget, a viewing figure, or a specific Netflix performance threshold. No reliable audience or production-cost number is established in the cited reporting, so the explanation is qualitative: Netflix judged the audience too small to justify the expense.
How the explanation changed from 2019 to 2023
The two public explanations belong to different points in the show’s timeline. In 2019, the issue was whether Fincher had the capacity and desire to continue after an exhausting second season; by 2023, he described Netflix’s cost-and-audience calculation as the reason another season was not moving forward.

The 2019 remarks explain why a continuation was uncertain during the hiatus; they should not be mistaken for a definitive cancellation announcement. The 2023 remarks address why a third season was not proceeding. Vanity Fair also reported Fincher’s 2023 statement and its implications for hopes of a return. Vanity Fair’s coverage
Did Fincher blame Netflix?
No. In the 2023 remarks, Fincher said he did not blame Netflix, while acknowledging that the company viewed the show’s audience as insufficient for its cost. His pride in the first two seasons is part of that explanation: he praised the work even as he described the business reason a third season was not justified.

Is Mindhunter ever coming back?
The cited statements do not announce a planned return or establish that a future season is impossible under every circumstance. They do show that Season 3 was not proceeding as of Fincher’s February 2023 explanation, and that he described a cost-to-audience problem rather than teasing an active continuation. Any claim about a later revival would need newer confirmation.
