Mike Tyson and Jake Paul had a documented professional connection before they fought: Tyson said Paul appeared on the undercard of his 2020 exhibition with Roy Jones Jr. Tyson called their 2024 matchup a “full circle moment.” That history does not establish that Tyson privately mentored Paul or that the two were friends. Their public relationship mixed event promotion and friction, while their post-fight comments emphasized respect.
How did Mike Tyson know Jake Paul?
In Netflix’s March 7, 2024 announcement of the matchup, Tyson said Paul had appeared on the undercard of Tyson’s 2020 exhibition with Roy Jones Jr. Tyson described the later fight as a “full circle moment,” adding that he had started Paul on his boxing journey.
That is the clearest documented link between them before the fight: a professional connection through boxing. Tyson’s account does not, by itself, show that he was Paul’s personal mentor or that they had a close private relationship.
Were Tyson and Paul friends?
The public record does not establish that they were friends. In an Associated Press report during fight week, AP described friendship as central to how the matchup came together, but also reported that Tyson said, “There’s no feeling attached,” when asked about friendship. That was an event-week remark, not a definitive account of their private relationship then or now.

The promotion also featured visible friction. Paul presented himself as a heel, saying audiences naturally wanted to root against his loud, polarizing persona. Tyson slapped Paul at the ceremonial weigh-in on November 14, 2024. Those moments were public events within the build-up; neither proves the men were privately hostile, nor that the conflict was staged.
What happened when they fought?
Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions announced the heavyweight matchup in March 2024. It took place on November 15, 2024, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Netflix reports that the bout lasted eight two-minute rounds and that Paul won by unanimous decision.

Tyson said he had no regrets about getting in the ring one last time. In a social media statement quoted by CBS News on November 16, he reflected on finishing eight rounds in front of his children and thanked people for the experience. These comments show what each man said after the event; they do not settle what their private relationship is today.
What can be said about their relationship today?
The available reporting is centered on the 2024 event and does not establish how Tyson and Paul currently describe their personal relationship as of October 8, 2026. The careful answer is that they had a boxing connection, built a major public event around it, and expressed respect or gratitude after the fight. Calling them close friends, personal mentor and student, or ongoing enemies goes beyond what these sources establish.
