Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a surprise visit to the family of Irma Garcia in Uvalde, Texas, in March 2024. Garcia was a teacher killed in the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting. Her nephew, John Martinez, said the couple joined his family to celebrate his mother’s birthday.
What happened during the Uvalde visit?
The San Antonio Express-News reported that Martinez said the couple came to his home for his mother’s birthday. In photos and video he shared from the gathering, Meghan is seen holding a cake and singing “Happy Birthday” with the family. Martinez wrote, “Meghan Markle singing my mom Happy Birthday was the cutest most adorable thing ever,” and said she had bought his mother a cake. San Antonio Express-News
Sky News quoted Martinez describing the cake as a surprise for his mother and calling the couple “so so thoughtful and sweet.” He also said, “They were the kindest most humble people ever, it was like having family and friends over… we laughed a lot and shared intimate memories together.” Those are Martinez’s personal descriptions of the visit. Who is Irma Garcia?
Irma Garcia was one of two teachers killed when a gunman attacked Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24, 2022. CBS News reported that 19 children and two teachers were killed in the shooting. Martinez, who shared details of the 2024 gathering, is Garcia’s nephew. CBS News
How the visit fits into the couple’s earlier Uvalde connection
Meghan had visited Uvalde on May 26, 2022, two days after the shooting, and placed flowers at a memorial, CBS News reported. The March 2024 family gathering was a separate visit during a Texas trip that included the South by Southwest conference in Austin, according to the San Antonio Express-News. There was also separate community work after the shooting: Archewell’s 2020–2022 impact report described work with the City of Uvalde and KABOOM! on a playground at DeLeon Park, which Archewell later said was unveiled in October 2022.
