Mussolini: Son of the Century is an eight-episode Sky Original drama about Benito Mussolini’s rise from the founding of the Fasci Italiani in 1919 to his 1925 parliamentary speech after socialist Giacomo Matteotti’s murder. Directed by Joe Wright and starring Luca Marinelli as Mussolini, it is adapted from Antonio Scurati’s novel. Sky announced releases in Italy and the UK in 2025; current availability depends on your country and service catalogue.
What is Mussolini: Son of the Century about?
The series follows Mussolini’s ascent during the years 1919–1925, as described in Sky’s announcement. Its endpoint is the parliamentary speech he delivered after the murder of socialist politician Giacomo Matteotti. That period frames the drama; the series is not presented as a complete account of Mussolini’s life or the full span of his dictatorship.
The story also includes Mussolini’s personal relationships, among them his wife Rachele and his lover Margherita Sarfatti. Sky describes the production as drawing on events, characters, dialogue and speeches documented or witnessed by multiple sources. That is the production’s account of its approach, not independent verification of every scene or a substitute for historical scholarship.
Who is in the cast, and who made the series?
Luca Marinelli plays Benito Mussolini, and Joe Wright directs. The series is written by Stefano Bises and Davide Serino; its series outline is credited to Bises, Serino and Scurati. Other production credits include cinematography by Seamus McGarvey, editing by Valerio Bonelli, costumes by Massimo Cantini Parrini, set design by Mauro Vanzati and a soundtrack by Tom Rowlands.

What is distinctive about the trailer and the series’ style?
In Sky’s Italian description, Mussolini breaks the fourth wall to address viewers directly. Sky characterizes the series as a contemporary, “pop” portrait, with moments of black humor. The device makes the central character a direct presence in the drama; it should not be confused with a documentary interview or an unmediated historical record.
Sky released the first teaser on August 2, 2024, ahead of the series’ world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, out of competition. The production is an eight-part Sky Studios project made with The Apartment, a Fremantle company, in co-production with Pathé, alongside Small Forward Productions, Fremantle, CINECITTÀ and Sky.
