This Murshid OTT review calls the drama dated in a specific sense: its familiar gangland conflicts and power plays feel well-worn, even when Menon and the cast give the material presence. Viewers who enjoy the genre or its performers may find more to like.
What is Murshid about?
Murshid Pathan has left his criminal past behind, but his former accomplice and rival Farid pulls him back into the underworld when Murshid’s son becomes entangled in a gang conflict. The central tension is whether Murshid can protect his family while confronting the power struggle he thought he had escaped.

The story draws on familiar Mumbai gangland ingredients: rival factions, threats to family, law enforcement, and political maneuvering. That is the basis for the “dated” judgment here—not a claim that the series is technically old-fashioned or out of step in every respect, but that its crime-and-power setup follows a well-travelled path.
Performances versus a familiar premise
Kay Kay Menon as Murshid Pathan
Menon is the series’ main draw as the ex-don at its center. The role gives the story a figure with a past, family stakes, and a reason to re-enter a dangerous world. The question is whether that performance can make a familiar premise feel newly compelling; viewers chiefly seeking a fresh take on the gangster genre may find the writing’s well-worn conflicts harder to overlook.

#1 Best Overall
Zakir Hussain and Tanuj Virwani
Zakir Hussain plays Farid, Murshid’s rival and former accomplice, while Tanuj Virwani plays Kumar Pratap. Their characters help establish the personal and gang-level stakes around Murshid. Rajesh Shringarpure is also among the principal cast, playing Jayendra Rao.
Why the series feels dated—and why that is not the only view
Scroll Staff’s 31 August 2024 review described the show as following “a path so well-trodden that the marks left by previous shows and movies haven’t faded yet.” That captures the central reservation: the gang-war premise and its familiar intersections of crime, family, police, and politics do not necessarily offer a distinctive new angle.
Rank #2
That response is not universal. The Times of India’s series page offered a more favorable assessment, calling the show a “distinct and refreshing take” within the crowded gangster-drama field. The difference is a useful guide for viewers: familiarity may be a drawback if freshness is your priority, but it may matter less if you are looking for a cast-led crime story in a recognizable genre.
