El diseñador puertorriqueño José Antonio Maldonado Fulladosa, conocido como Nono Maldonado, murió el 16 de julio de 2025 a los 79 años. El Nuevo Día informó ese día que varias fuentes confirmaron su fallecimiento; Primera Hora también dio la noticia. Su carrera, de más de cinco décadas, abarcó la moda masculina y femenina y el diseño de interiores.
De Mayagüez a Nueva York y de regreso a Puerto Rico
Maldonado nació en Mayagüez el 10 de agosto de 1945. Según la biografía oficial resumida por People en Español, se graduó de Fordham University en 1967 y trabajó como comprador en Bloomingdale’s, en Nueva York. Entre 1972 y 1975 fue editor de moda de Esquire.
Volvió a Puerto Rico en 1976. Metro Puerto Rico sitúa en junio de 1977 la apertura de su boutique y el inicio de sus diseños de ropa masculina bajo su propia marca. En 1980 presentó su primera colección de ropa femenina, según El Nuevo Día y Metro Puerto Rico.
Una carrera entre la moda y el interiorismo
Durante más de cinco décadas, Maldonado trabajó tanto la indumentaria masculina como la femenina y también diseñó espacios interiores. Su recorrido enlazó la experiencia editorial y comercial adquirida en Nueva York con una práctica de diseño desarrollada en Puerto Rico.

Primera Hora lo describió como uno de los primeros modistos en presentar dos colecciones al año. El Nuevo Día afirmó que fue el primero en Puerto Rico en adoptar ese calendario. Esa primacía debe entenderse como una atribución de esos medios: las fuentes disponibles no ofrecen un registro independiente que compare los calendarios de todos los diseñadores de la isla.
La retrospectiva que preservó su obra
En 2019, la Universidad Ana G. Méndez presentó Nono Maldonado: el orden de las formas; la exposición pasó después al Museo de Arte y Diseño de Miramar, informó Primera Hora. El análisis de Paula María Arribas publicado en 2021 por Visión Doble, revista de crítica e historia del arte de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, describe una muestra que reunió más de treinta años de trabajo.

Además de prendas, la exposición incluyó fotografías, portadas, invitaciones y carteles. Arribas sostiene que ese conjunto ayuda a documentar y proponer una cronología de la moda puertorriqueña, y plantea que la moda debe considerarse también parte de la historia del arte de la isla. Así, el legado queda registrado no solo en las piezas diseñadas, sino en los materiales que permiten situarlas en su contexto.

Tras conocerse su fallecimiento, la gobernadora Jenniffer González Colón expresó su pesar y lo describió como “uno de los grandes pilares de la moda puertorriqueña”. People en Español reprodujo también el homenaje del fotógrafo Gustavo Arango, quien recordó que Maldonado lo retó a observar los vestidos con intención antes de fotografiarlos.

Sobre la causa de muerte, People en Español señaló que Univision reportó que Maldonado había enfrentado una larga batalla contra el cáncer; Univision atribuyó esa información a la diseñadora Carlota Alfaro. Las fuentes citadas no incluyen una declaración directa de familiares, un representante o un documento oficial que la confirme de forma independiente, por lo que la causa debe mantenerse como un reporte atribuido.
