MOVIEPASS, MOVIECRASH is HBO’s documentary about the subscription service’s rise and collapse, told through interviews with co-founders Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt as well as former CEO Mitch Lowe and other people connected to the company. It follows MoviePass from its founding to its $9.99-a-month growth push, its bankruptcy, and Spikes’s effort to bring it back—while presenting competing perspectives on who shaped the company and why it failed.
What is MOVIEPASS, MOVIECRASH about?
The HBO Original documentary traces MoviePass from its origins through its rapid expansion and collapse. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement describes a film built around interviews with co-founders, former CEO Mitch Lowe, employees, investors, subscribers, analysts, and journalists. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the documentary on May 28, 2024.
That range of voices matters: the film is not simply a founder profile or a technical account of a subscription product. It sets personal recollections alongside the perspectives of people who worked for, funded, used, and covered MoviePass. Director Muta’Ali Muhammad said the founders had been pushed aside in the telling of the company’s history and that he wanted to restore their role. That is the director’s stated framing, not an independently established conclusion about why they were sidelined. The Guardian’s 2024 interview with Muhammad discusses that perspective.
Who founded MoviePass, and what happened to them?
Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt launched MoviePass in 2011, according to Fast Company’s account of the documentary. The company had more than 10,000 subscribers by 2016, but was struggling to secure additional funding, the same report says.

MoviePass drew much broader attention in 2017, when it introduced a plan priced at $9.99 per month that allowed one movie a day. The low monthly price helped drive rapid subscriber growth, as reported by Fast Company and Inc.. But subscriber growth alone did not settle whether the business could sustainably cover the cost of customers’ movie tickets. The documentary’s accounts of the founders’ original concept and the later growth strategy should not be collapsed into one story: the company’s direction, funding and leadership changed as it expanded.
Fast Company reports that Spikes and Watt were fired in January 2018. MoviePass filed for bankruptcy in 2020; TechCrunch reported that Spikes bought the company in 2021 and later relaunched it. TechCrunch’s May 29, 2024 coverage identifies both co-founders as interviewees in the film and recounts those later events.

Why did MoviePass collapse?
The documentary explores the contrast between the founders’ account of the company and the strategy that accompanied its explosive growth. Spikes offers a metaphor for the danger of moving too fast: “It wasn’t the iceberg that took out the Titanic,” he told Inc. “It was the Titanic going too fast to navigate through an iceberg field.” It is his interpretation of the company’s trajectory, not a settled finding about the cause of its failure.
The economics of the $9.99 plan are one part of the story, but the available accounts do not establish a single cause that explains the collapse. The original business concept, the low-priced growth strategy, financing decisions, governance, and leadership changes are distinct parts of the history. The film brings participants’ interpretations together; viewers should distinguish those recollections and arguments from documented regulatory allegations.

What the SEC complaint alleges
A separate account comes from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In a complaint filed September 26, 2022, the SEC alleged that former executives made materially false or misleading statements about MoviePass’s non-subscription revenue and subscriber usage. The complaint said internal projections estimated non-subscription revenue of $0.50 per subscriber in April 2018 and $2 per subscriber by March 2019, and described a discrepancy between those projections and public claims made in 2018. These are allegations in the SEC’s complaint, not findings presented here as convictions or a final adjudication. Read the SEC complaint.
