Morning Joe disabled or restricted replies and comments on its social accounts and paused posting video clips after hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski disclosed a November 2024 meeting with then president-elect Donald Trump. Contemporary reports documented the timing and account changes, but did not establish why the show made them. The episode exposed a familiar tension in political journalism: the value of access and communication versus the risk that a high-profile meeting can look like normalization.
What happened, and when
On Monday, November 18, 2024, Scarborough and Brzezinski told viewers they had met Trump at Mar-a-Lago the previous Friday, November 15. Axios reported that the meeting began at 8 a.m. and lasted more than an hour; The Daily Beast reported that it was the first time the three had spoken since March 2020. Axios and The Daily Beast covered the disclosure and its context.
The hosts said they discussed political issues including abortion, mass deportation, threats of political retribution and media outlets. Brzezinski described the meeting as an effort to restart communication. In Axios’s account, she said, “Joe and I realized it’s time to do something different.” She also defended speaking with the president-elect, asking, “For those asking why we would speak to the president-elect during such fraught times, I would ask back: Why wouldn’t we?”
Why did Morning Joe turn off comments?
Reports published November 19 and 20 said the show’s X account disabled replies, comments were turned off on social accounts, and the program stopped posting video clips for the next two mornings. Gizmodo and The Daily Beast documented those changes as negative responses to the meeting appeared online.

Those reports establish what happened and when, not the show’s motive. They do not cite a confirmed explanation from the program for restricting comments or pausing clips, nor do they establish how long the changes lasted. It is therefore accurate to say the account changes followed the backlash; it is not established that the show made them for a particular reason.
Why the meeting drew criticism—and defenses
Some viewers and political or media figures objected to the meeting and called for a boycott. Their criticism centered in part on the contrast between the hosts’ prior criticism of Trump and the decision to meet him privately. As former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno put it to the Associated Press, “What the followers see is the daily procession of people on the show constantly talking about the evils of Donald Trump and then Joe and Mika show up and have high tea with the guy.”

That objection is about symbolism and credibility as much as access: a meeting can be read as conferring legitimacy, even if its participants intend to make their views clear. The hosts’ stated case was that communication with an incoming president mattered. The Associated Press also recorded arguments in favor of maintaining access and dialogue. Neither position, nor the online reaction, should be treated as speaking for every viewer. The reports provide examples and descriptions of criticism, not a representative survey.
What the audience figures do—and do not—show
The Associated Press, citing Nielsen figures in its November 25, 2024 report, compared Morning Joe’s reported yearly average with four daily audiences around the announcement. The post-announcement figures are a short sequence, not proof of a lasting ratings effect.

AP cautioned that its initial comparison covered only three days of data after the announcement. The figures vary across those days, and the brief window cannot show whether the meeting caused a sustained change; it also cannot separate the meeting’s effect from other possible influences on viewership. The sequence is clear: the hosts disclosed their meeting with Trump, criticism followed, and the show’s accounts restricted audience interaction while clip posting paused. The public record cited in contemporaneous coverage does not explain the program’s decision or demonstrate that online critics represented its audience as a whole. The episode is best understood as a dispute over the meaning of access—whether talking with a powerful political figure is a journalistic responsibility, a concession, or potentially both—rather than as proof of a single public verdict.
