Why Mike Myers Appeared in Inglourious Basterds and Bohemian Rhapsody

Mike Myers’s roles in Inglourious Basterds and Bohemian Rhapsody have distinct explanations: one is a period character part, the other a sharp callback to Wayne’s World.

Mike Myers’s two unexpected film appearances have different explanations. In Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, he plays a British general shaped as a period character. In Bohemian Rhapsody, he plays a fictional record executive whose doubts about Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” set up a knowing callback to Myers’s own Wayne’s World.

Mike Myers’s two roles at a glance

Film Myers’s role What explains the appearance
Inglourious Basterds (2009) General Ed Fenech, a British officer involved in planning the film’s fictional Operation Kino Director Quentin Tarantino said Myers’s interest in his work and World War II, along with his character-acting ability, made him a strong fit for the part.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) Ray Foster, a fictional EMI executive Foster’s skepticism about the song evokes its famous car sequence in Wayne’s World (1992), starring Myers. The available sources establish the allusion, but not a first-person explanation of the casting choice.

Why Tarantino cast him in Inglourious Basterds

Myers is not playing himself in Tarantino’s 2009 film. As General Ed Fenech, he appears as an older British officer involved in planning Operation Kino, the movie’s fictional Allied plot around a Nazi film premiere. The operation belongs to the film’s alternate-history story, not to the historical record.

Tarantino described Myers as an admirer of his films, a World War II enthusiast and a terrific character actor. He said he imagined Fenech as an older British general in the manner of actor George Sanders. In a Rotten Tomatoes cast interview, Tarantino put one part of the connection plainly: “Mike has just let it be known that he’s an admirer of my work.”

The role was also shaped through period references. Tarantino had Myers watch 1940s films featuring Alan Napier, an actor who often appeared opposite Sanders, to help him capture the character’s carefully articulated speech and manner, according to the Los Angeles Times. That preparation helps explain why the cameo works as a brief character performance rather than a wink at Myers’s celebrity persona.

Myers appeared with Tarantino and other cast members during the film’s presentation at Cannes on May 20, 2009, as recorded by the Festival de Cannes.

Why his Bohemian Rhapsody scene recalls Wayne’s World

In Bohemian Rhapsody, Myers plays Ray Foster, a fictional EMI executive who doubts that Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” can work as a single. The 20th Century Studios film page lists Myers among the cast and gives the film’s release date as November 2, 2018.

Foster argues that teenagers listening in their cars will not want to headbang to a long song. That objection points directly toward the scene many viewers associate with Myers: the car ride in Wayne’s World, where he and his friends enthusiastically sing along to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The sequence became a memorable part of the song’s screen history; a Rolling Stone Australia oral history describes its role in introducing the track to a new generation of listeners.

The joke is that Foster imagines the very kind of car-bound audience that Wayne’s World made iconic, only to dismiss the song that made the scene memorable. It gives Myers’s appearance an extra layer of recognition beyond the biographical drama’s story. The callback is evident in the scene, but the available sources do not establish that the filmmakers or Myers gave a first-person account of why he was cast as Foster.

Two cameos, two different kinds of recognition

Fenech is a crafted supporting character: Tarantino’s stated casting rationale and period-film preparation point to Myers’s ability to inhabit an older British officer. Foster, by contrast, works as a small piece of screen-history shorthand. His resistance to the song makes sense within the film’s story, while the car-and-headbanging reference rewards viewers who remember Wayne’s World.
