What happened at the Laugh Factory
Richards, known for playing Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld, directed a racist tirade at hecklers during a stand-up performance at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles on November 17, 2006. He repeatedly used an anti-Black slur. Cellphone footage of the performance circulated widely. The Los Angeles Times recounts the incident and its aftermath; this was not a newly reported event in 2024.

Richards later appeared by satellite on The Late Show with David Letterman to apologize, according to the Times. The incident sharply changed his public profile, but the details of his later feelings and motives should be understood as his own account, not as independent proof of personal transformation.
What Richards said about the incident and a comeback
In a May 2024 interview with People, reported by The Guardian, Richards said: “I was immediately sorry the moment I said it onstage.” He also stated plainly: “I’m not looking for a comeback.” He described his anger as coming “hard and fast” and said he tried to learn from what happened rather than run from it.
#1 Best Overall
Richards said he spent years in “deep analysis” of his insecurities and discomfort with celebrity. He also said he turned down a Hollywood Walk of Fame star and multiple offers to host Saturday Night Live because he did not feel deserving. These explanations reflect how Richards described his choices; they are not an objective diagnosis of why he withdrew.
Why comeback rumors resurfaced
Richards made a rare public appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted in April 2024, then gave interviews around the release of his memoir, Entrances and Exits. Those events prompted renewed attention, but an appearance and a press interview are not evidence of a planned acting return.
Rank #2
His screen career after 2006 was limited rather than nonexistent. The Guardian notes appearances in a handful of episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, along with a supporting role in Kirstie, which was canceled after one season in 2014. The distinction matters: sporadic work and renewed interviews do not by themselves amount to a broad career resurgence.

In a June 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Richards described withdrawing from public life and said he did not want pity: “I don’t want any pity, you know?” He said explaining what happened and where he was going was part of his apology. That is his framing of the memoir and his response; it does not establish that the public, or those harmed by the incident, accepted the apology. Entertainment Tonight’s interview offers his later perspective.

The Los Angeles Times also quoted Richards writing in his memoir: “Public condemnation and humiliation are forms of justice.” That line describes his reflection on the consequences he faced, not a universal measure of accountability or evidence of how others experienced the incident.
