In July 2024, news reports said the Lake Fire in Santa Barbara County threatened properties including Michael Jackson’s former Neverland Ranch. That report did not establish that the ranch burned or was damaged. CAL FIRE said damage assessments were still underway on July 9, and the sources available do not verify the ranch’s outcome or present condition.
What happened at Neverland Ranch?
The Lake Fire began in Santa Barbara County on July 5, 2024. In a July 9 report, US 99/Audacy included the former Neverland Ranch among the properties threatened by the fire. The report supports describing the ranch as threatened; it does not confirm that flames reached the property or that it sustained damage.
On the same date, CAL FIRE said crews were locating structures impacted by the fire and that damage assessments were ongoing. That update does not identify Neverland Ranch specifically, so it cannot establish either damage or no damage there.
What did firefighters say about their response?
US 99/Audacy reported Santa Barbara County Fire Commander Anthony Stornetta describing a direct attack on the fire line where terrain allowed, with an indirect approach in steep, rugged areas and efforts to work ahead of the fire. The outlet reported his remarks as: “As we’re looking at the fire, we’re trying to go direct and directly on the fire line,” and, “If we can’t do it because of the steep, rugged terrain, we’ll go indirect. But we’re also looking way ahead of the fire as well.”

How large did the Lake Fire become?
CAL FIRE’s 2024 season archive records the Lake Fire’s final size as 38,664 acres and its containment as 100%. These are the incident’s historical final figures, not a statement about conditions at the ranch during the early July reports or its condition today.
Is Neverland Ranch currently at risk?
The 2024 report is not evidence of a present-day threat. The sources here do not establish the property’s current condition. CAL FIRE cautions that its incident pages are general references, not up-to-the-minute information on evacuations or fire behavior. For an active emergency, use current local emergency alerts and official incident updates rather than relying on an old report or an archived incident page.
