Michelle Trachtenberg was known to audiences as both Dawn Summers, Buffy’s younger sister on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Georgina Sparks, the mischievous disruptor on Gossip Girl. Her career began years earlier, with a Nickelodeon role and the title part in Harriet the Spy, and continued across film and television. She died in New York City on February 26, 2025, aged 39.
From child actor to leading role in Harriet the Spy
Born in New York City, Trachtenberg began acting as a child, appearing in commercials and television. At eight, she began playing Nona Mecklenberg on Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete, a role she held from 1994 to 1996, according to the Associated Press. The Los Angeles Times traces her rise from the series to a prominent film role.

In 1996, Trachtenberg starred as Harriet in the film adaptation of Louise Fitzhugh’s children’s novel Harriet the Spy. The part placed her at the center of a feature film while she was still young, marking a step from her early television work into a broader range of screen roles. Readers interested in the story’s origins can look to Fitzhugh’s novel, which inspired the adaptation.
Dawn Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer
In 2000, Trachtenberg joined Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Dawn Summers, Buffy’s younger sister. The Los Angeles Times reports that she appeared in 66 episodes over three years, from 2000 to 2003. Dawn brought Trachtenberg into a supernatural drama built around an established ensemble, and gave viewers a character whose place in Buffy’s life was central to the show’s family story.

Georgina Sparks made an entrance on Gossip Girl
On Gossip Girl, Trachtenberg played Georgina Sparks, a recurring antagonist whose returns stirred up complications for the series’ central characters. The role gave her a different kind of impact: Georgina was a socialite who could unsettle the group and redirect a storyline whenever she appeared.
Trachtenberg returned as Georgina for two guest appearances in the 2021 Gossip Girl revival, the Associated Press reported. The Los Angeles Times described the revival as her final acting credit; that is a report about her screen credits, not a statement about her personal plans.
A career beyond her signature television roles
Trachtenberg’s screen work extended across films and television beyond Buffy and Gossip Girl. Her credits included Inspector Gadget, EuroTrip, Ice Princess and 17 Again, along with television roles in Six Feet Under, Weeds, Mercy and Killing Kennedy. She also appeared in the Tubi true-crime series Meet, Marry, Murder.
Those roles show a career that did not rest on a single character or genre: childhood comedy and adventure, supernatural and social dramas, films, and crime-focused television all formed part of her body of work.

What was reported about her death
Trachtenberg died in New York City on February 26, 2025, at 39. Initial news reports said the cause of death was undetermined. On April 16, the New York City medical examiner amended the cause and manner after reviewing laboratory test results, determining that she died of complications of diabetes mellitus and that the manner of death was natural. The Associated Press and CBS News reported the amended finding. It superseded the earlier undetermined report; no further conclusions about her medical history follow from the public finding.
Co-stars remembered her
After Trachtenberg’s death, co-stars shared public tributes. Blake Lively, her Gossip Girl co-star, wrote, “She was electricity,” as reported by TIME. Lively also recalled her as fiercely loyal and bold—personal recollections from a colleague, rather than claims that can be independently established.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy opposite Trachtenberg’s Dawn, also paid tribute, echoing a line from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Other tributes came from Taylor Momsen and James Marsters. Together, the responses reflected how closely viewers and colleagues associated Trachtenberg with the sharply drawn characters she brought to the screen.
