Ultra Music Festival ended its first day early at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami on Friday, March 22, 2024, after organizers cited severe weather, lightning and strong winds. The three-day festival resumed on Saturday; Friday’s shutdown did not cancel the whole event.
Why did Ultra shut down on Friday?
Organizers said the temporary shutdown was for attendee safety as severe weather threatened the festival. Their message, reproduced by the Associated Press, said: “For your safety, Ultra Friday is temporarily shutting down. Please calmly leave the park now.”
Miami-Dade Emergency Management had relayed a National Weather Service forecast for clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms from Friday evening into Saturday morning, with storms potentially lasting into Saturday afternoon. The forecast included heavy rain, localized flooding, severe winds, hail and an isolated tornado risk.
A National Weather Service Miami Special Weather Statement issued at 8:55 p.m. EDT described a strong thunderstorm affecting parts of northern Miami-Dade and southern Broward through 9:30 p.m. It warned of frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, winds in excess of 40 mph and pea-size hail. The wind figure was a stated hazard, not a measured gust at the festival. The statement documents the local danger but does not establish the conditions at every stage or the exact time organizers made their decision.

When and where did the shutdown happen?
The incident occurred at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami on Friday, March 22, 2024. Miami Police listed Ultra’s 2024 dates as March 22–24 and the planned Friday hours as 4 p.m. to midnight. Organizers ended the first day before its scheduled close. The exact shutdown time has not been established.
Was the 2024 festival cancelled?
No. The shutdown was for Friday night, not a cancellation of the full three-day festival. Ultra resumed on Saturday, March 23. CBS Miami reported that organizers extended Saturday night by an extra hour to make up for Friday’s early end; that schedule change was reported by the outlet and is not independently confirmed here by an organizer notice.

How many people were at the festival?
The Associated Press reported that 55,000 attendees were expected across the three days. That was an expected total, not a verified attendance count and not the number present when Friday’s shutdown began. No measured Day One attendance total is established in the available contemporaneous reporting.
