Why is the Passion of the Christ sequel split into two parts?
Gibson said the two-film format gives the story more room. In a September 2026 interview with CBN’s Gordon Robertson, he said the screenplay draws on the four Gospels, Acts, the letters of Peter and Paul, and writings by other Christian historical figures. He described an intention to respect Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions while filling in historical gaps. That is Gibson’s account of his approach, not an independent assessment of the completed film’s theological or historical accuracy. The available announcements do not establish detailed plot summaries for either installment.
Gibson also told Robertson, “Lighting-wise and the texture of the film visually will be kind of the same as the last one. It is definitely inspired by all religious art that came before it.” CBN published the interview on September 16, 2026.
How does the sequel compare with the original film?
The Passion of the Christ, released in 2004, was a major theatrical success. Figures differ slightly by source and reporting convention:
Rank #2
| Source | Reported worldwide gross | Other reported figure |
|---|---|---|
| LEONINE Studios, 2026 | More than $610 million | Around 1.3 million German theatrical admissions |
| Lionsgate/EPIC, 2026 | $610 million | $30 million production budget |
| Variety, as reported by Fathom in 2026 | $610 million | $370 million domestic gross against a $30 million budget |
LEONINE also said the original appeared in Netflix’s Top 10 rankings in 46 countries over Easter 2025 and 2026, reaching number one in 10 countries. That is a report about those Easter periods, not a statement of current streaming availability.

Can you still see the original film’s 2026 theatrical re-release?
No. Fathom Entertainment’s U.S. engagement ran September 10–17, 2026, and has ended. It featured a 4K restoration with Dolby Atmos and a behind-the-scenes preview of the sequel. A July 2026 media advisory said the restoration used the original camera negative, with a new color pass supervised by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel; Gibson reviewed and approved the Atmos mix. Fathom Entertainment announced the engagement.
What has not been announced?
The cited announcements do not establish a streaming service or streaming date, physical-media release for the sequel, or ticket-presale date. The original film’s 2026 re-release and its ticket window do not confirm any ticketing arrangements for the new films.
