Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, returned to Instagram on January 1, 2025, with a black-and-white video of herself writing “2025” in the sand. The Associated Press confirmed that the personal account, @meghan, belonged to her.
What Meghan posted on New Year’s Day
The video showed Meghan walking toward the shore and writing “2025” in the sand. The Associated Press described the clip as black and white. It was her first post on the @meghan account, which AP reported had more than 200,000 followers at the time. That is a January 1, 2025 figure, not a current follower count.
Sky News reported that a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess said Prince Harry filmed the clip and that the beach was near the couple’s home in Montecito, California. Those details were attributed to the spokesperson, not independently established by the report.
Why the post marked a return
The New Year’s video followed a break from public Instagram activity. Meghan had already signaled that she expected to return: in a 2022 interview with New York Magazine’s The Cut, she said, “Do you want to know a secret? I’m getting back … on Instagram.” The Associated Press quoted that statement in its report on the 2025 post.

Meghan’s earlier royal social-media accounts
Before launching their own account, Meghan and Prince Harry were included in the royal family’s @KensingtonRoyal presence. In 2019, they launched @SussexRoyal. The Associated Press reported that the account was discontinued in 2020, around the time the couple announced they were stepping back from their official roles.
