Who Was Gunjan Saxena? Her Helicopter Missions in the Kargil War

Gunjan Saxena was an Indian Air Force helicopter pilot who flew unarmed Cheetah helicopters in the 1999 Kargil War, including casualty evacuations and missions to spot Pakistani positions. But she was not the only woman pilot who flew in the conflict: Flight Lieutenant Srividya Rajan also served in the war zone. Accounts of who was first differ, so “India’s only woman warrior” is not an accurate unqualified description.

Who is Gunjan Saxena?

Saxena is a former Indian Air Force (IAF) Flight Lieutenant and helicopter pilot. According to her publisher, Penguin Random House India, she graduated from Delhi University’s Hansraj College, cleared the Services Selection Board in 1994 and joined the Air Force Academy at Dundigal. She was inspired by her father, an Indian Army officer. The publisher describes her as the first female IAF officer to serve in a war zone.

Her story is also told in The Kargil Girl: An Autobiography, listed by Penguin Random House India as co-written by Saxena and Kiran Nirvan. The publisher’s biography and book listing are a place to start for readers seeking Saxena’s own account.

What did Saxena do during the Kargil War?

In 1999, Saxena flew Cheetah helicopters in the Kargil combat area. NDTV’s 2016 report, based on an interview with Saxena, describes the aircraft as unarmed and says the pilots carried out casualty evacuations and missions to spot Pakistani positions. Saxena said evacuating casualties was a central part of her work: “I would say it’s a very satisfying feeling when you save a life because that is what you’re there for.”

The Times of India reported in 2020, based on an interview with Saxena’s father, that she and Rajan flew at heights close to 18,000 feet, transported troops and supplies, evacuated soldiers and completed 10 sorties. That sortie figure is a secondary reported detail, not an official published mission tally.

Was Gunjan Saxena the only woman pilot in the Kargil War?

No. NDTV’s account identifies both Saxena and Flight Lieutenant Srividya Rajan as women combat aviators who flew in the 1999 war zone. Saxena’s important service does not make her the only woman pilot conducting Kargil missions.

Claims about who was “first” also need attribution. NDTV described Saxena and Rajan as the first Indian women combat aviators to enter a war zone. The Indian Express reported that Rajan objected to the autobiography’s description of Saxena as the “first woman Air Force officer who went to war.” The available accounts establish that both flew during the conflict, but do not settle the precise chronology of their first missions.

How should viewers understand the 2020 film?

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, starring Janhvi Kapoor, was released on Netflix in 2020. The Indian Express reported that its disclaimer described the film as inspired by Saxena’s achievements while taking creative liberties and dramatizing events. It is a dramatization, not an operational record.

The film also prompted disagreement about its depiction of the IAF’s work culture. The Indian Express reported that the Air Force objected to the portrayal of institutional gender bias, while Rajan challenged aspects of the representation. Saxena cautioned against generalizing individual experiences, saying, “It would be unfair to generalise everything. No two individuals were the same.” These were positions expressed during the 2020 controversy; they do not, by themselves, settle every question about the events portrayed.

What the accounts establish—and what they do not

  • Operational role: NDTV’s 2016 participant interview reports that Saxena and Rajan flew unarmed Cheetah helicopters, evacuating casualties and spotting positions.
  • Career background: Penguin Random House India provides Saxena’s career biography and lists her autobiography; it is a publisher source, not a military mission record.
  • Disputed labels: NDTV and The Indian Express document differing claims about the “first” woman to go to war. Neither supports calling Saxena the only woman pilot in the Kargil combat zone.
  • Film portrayal: The 2020 film explicitly allowed for creative liberties, and its depiction became part of a public dispute rather than a definitive historical account.
