Lanny Smoot is an electrical engineer and Disney Imagineer whose inventions turn engineering into theatrical effects and interactive experiences. In 2024, the National Inventors Hall of Fame inducted him in its theatrical technologies and special effects category. Disney described him as the first Disney Imagineer to receive that distinction and the second person from The Walt Disney Company inducted, after Walt Disney.
Who is Lanny Smoot?
Smoot grew up in Brooklyn and developed an early interest in tinkering. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering at Columbia University, then began working at Bell Labs in 1978. His work there and later at Bellcore included fiber-optic transmission, video conferencing, and systems for viewing remote locations. He joined Disney in 1998 and became a Disney Research Fellow. The National Inventors Hall of Fame biography describes work across interactive attractions, special effects, ride-vehicle concepts, and technologies used in parks, resorts, and cruise ships.
Why was Smoot inducted?
The Hall of Fame recognized Smoot in 2024 for theatrical technologies and special effects. The induction reflects a career applying engineering to how audiences see, move through, and interact with entertainment—not just a single invention. Disney’s January 2024 announcement called him the first Disney Imagineer inducted and the company’s second inductee after Walt Disney.
Patent totals should be treated as dated snapshots. Disney reported more than 100 patents, including 74 created during Smoot’s 25 years at Disney, in its 2024 announcement. The Hall of Fame’s 2024 fact sheet gave a specific career total of 106 patents; that is the organization’s figure for that year, not a current independently verified count.

What did Lanny Smoot invent?
Many of Smoot’s inventions are components of attractions or guest experiences rather than products sold to consumers. Examples show two complementary strands of his work: effects and interactive systems installed in entertainment venues, and platforms such as HoloTile that remain development technologies in the cited accounts.
Madame Leota’s floating effect
Disney credits Smoot with the effect that makes Madame Leota appear to float in the Séance Room of the Haunted Mansion. It is an effect integrated into an operating attraction, not a retail product.

Interactive lightsaber experiences
Smoot and his team developed lightsaber technology that extends and retracts. Disney and the Hall of Fame also describe an interactive experience at the former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, where guests trained against a droid and deflected simulated blasts. These accounts concern theatrical and guest-experience technology; they do not establish a consumer version for sale.
Interactive attractions and play
Other examples include the Magic Playfloor on Disney Cruise Line and the Fortress Explorations adventure at Tokyo DisneySea. Smoot also worked on experiences such as Where’s the Fire? at EPCOT, which the Hall of Fame describes as a past operation. These projects illustrate how interactive technology can make visitors participants in a story rather than spectators.

HoloTile: a modular omnidirectional floor
Disney describes HoloTile as a multi-person, omnidirectional, modular, expandable treadmill floor developed by Smoot with other Imagineers. Its moving surface is intended to let people walk in different directions while remaining within a confined area. Disney has discussed possible uses in shared virtual-reality movement, games, and theatrical staging.
The National Inventors Hall of Fame announced a HoloTile prototype exhibit at its museum in May 2024. That announcement documents an exhibit at that time; it does not establish that the exhibit remains on display or that HoloTile is commercially available. The cited accounts describe a technology and potential applications, not a consumer product.

How does Smoot connect engineering with storytelling?
Smoot’s work combines technical problem-solving with the creative design of an experience. In a USPTO interview, he emphasized the partnership: “not only does the company support invention—and we do real science, our research is right up there with the research of any of the other big tech companies—but we have that one advantage, which is that we have creative people, artists, modelers, sculptors, architects, who can take that technology, wrap it in a world of wonder and beauty and make an attraction.” The statement captures why his work is often encountered as an effect or an attraction rather than as a standalone device.
The Hall of Fame biography also quotes Smoot on individual ability: “I chose technology myself, but I believe that every person has a special talent, sometimes multiple talents, and I would love to see a world that exposes more life choices to all people so that their natural talents can bloom.”
