King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia’s immediate family includes their daughters, Leonor and Sofía. Leonor, the elder, is heir to the Spanish Crown and Princess of Asturias. The official Royal Household grouping also includes Felipe VI’s parents, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía; a wider genealogical tree extends to the King’s sisters and their children.

Who is in the Spanish royal family?

The Royal Household’s family-tree page groups six people under “La Familia Real”: King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofía, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía. That official grouping is narrower than the wider family tree, which also includes Felipe VI’s sisters and their children. See the Royal Household family tree.

The distinction has historical context. In an official document published around Felipe VI’s accession, the Royal Household explained: “Here in Spain we differentiate between the King’s Family and the Royal Family.” Its description reflects the 2014 transition and should not be read as a current roster beyond the six people listed on the Household’s current family-tree page. Read the Royal Household’s 2014 document.

Scope Who it includes
Official “La Familia Real” grouping Felipe VI, Letizia, Leonor, Sofía, Juan Carlos and Sofía, as listed by the Royal Household.
Wider family tree The six above, plus Felipe VI’s sisters, Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina, and their children, as described in Queen Sofía’s Royal Household biography.

How is Princess Leonor related to King Felipe?

Leonor is Felipe VI and Queen Letizia’s elder daughter. She was born on 31 October 2005. Her younger sister, Infanta Sofía, was born on 29 April 2007. The Royal Household’s biographies give these family relationships and birth dates. King Felipe VI’s biography.

Who is next in line to the Spanish throne?

Leonor is the heir to the Crown. The Royal Household identifies her as heir and she holds the title Princess of Asturias, traditionally associated with the successor. The available official material identifies her position but does not establish a full, current numbered succession roster.

What the Constitution says about succession

Article 57 of the Spanish Constitution says the Crown is hereditary and sets precedence by line, degree, sex and age: an earlier line precedes a later one; within a line, a closer degree precedes a more distant one; among people at the same degree, a male precedes a female; and among people of the same sex, the older precedes the younger. The text therefore retains male preference for people at the same degree; it is not a wholly gender-neutral rule. Article 57.2 gives the heir the dignity of Prince or Princess of Asturias and the traditional titles associated with the successor. Read Article 57 in the BOE’s English version of the Constitution.
