Timothy Wayne is Tim McGraw’s nephew and a country singer-songwriter who opened six dates on McGraw’s Standing Room Only Tour in June 2024. That opening-act credit is historical, not evidence of a current tour role. Wayne’s early releases and songwriting offer a glimpse of a career developing alongside his college studies.

Who is Timothy Wayne?

Wayne is a country artist whose connection to McGraw is family as well as musical: he is McGraw’s nephew. Reporting in 2024 described him as a rising junior at Louisiana State University, where he was studying while writing songs and playing shows. A 2025 profile described him as a senior history major. Those are dated descriptions, not confirmation of his current enrollment.

According to Southern Living’s reporting, republished by AOL, Wayne was not pursuing a record deal when a video of him performing songs at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe reached UMG Nashville. He said that college occupied much of his attention while he wrote and played shows. The reporting tied that introduction to his subsequent label release.

When did Timothy Wayne open for Tim McGraw?

In June 2024, Wayne was booked as the first opener on six dates of McGraw’s Standing Room Only Tour, before Carly Pearce. The dates were:

Early singles in 2024

Wayne released “God Made A Country Boy” in May 2024. The profile covering its release called it his first major-label track and reported that farm work and lessons from family informed the song. “That’d Be You” and his first writing credit

On February 28, 2025, Wayne released “That’d Be You,” which American Songwriter described as his first song with a writing credit. He co-wrote it with Jamie Moore and Mark Collie. Wayne said he brought Collie a melody and story idea, after which Collie arranged the writing session with Moore. “I had the melody stuck in my head for a while and a concept of a story,” he recalled.

Wayne also described working with McGraw in the studio: “We just collaborate a bunch while we’re in the studio and throw ideas back and forth.” His account identifies collaboration, while the available reporting does not assign McGraw a writing credit on “That’d Be You.”
